It is not always the games with the best chess that leave behind the strongest memories. On the contrary, sometimes a break in the logical line of thought in a game results in a maze of chaotic complications and is the ingredient which gives the game its distinctive flavour.

Each game is critically dissected, and each claim of a mistake backed up by hard analysis. In striving for perfection Timman seeks to discover the truth of each game; to provide not just a wonderful annotated game, but to present the definitive evaluation behind a top-class struggle between two great minds.

For quite a few years. I have cherished the idea of publising a selectio of my own games.

Venezuelan-born pianist and composer Edward Simon recorded for the third time with his group Afinidad, a quartet co-founded in 2000 with altoist David Binney, which also includes bassist Scott Colley and drummer Brian Blade. Simon wrote the two bodies of work that comprises "Sorrows & Triumphs" with the musical qualities of his peers in mind, and also invited special guests to further underscore his sophisticated arrangements. You’ll hear guitarist Adam Rogers, vocalist Gretchen Parlato, percussionists Rogerio Boccato and Luis Quintero, as well as the chamber quintet Imani Winds.
