2017 saw the long-awaited and much anticipated return of Star Trek to our television screens with Star Trek: Discovery on CBS All Access. One of the many great things about this new series, especially as opposed to the last Star Trek series that aired on television, Star Trek: Enterprise, is its soaring theme music from composer Jeff Russo. While Enterprise’s theme music was a cheesy cover of a Rod Stewart song, Discovery’s theme brought us back to the soaring sense of adventure of all the previous series in the Trek canon. It reminded us all of why we love this franchise so much in the first place.

This Northern Ireland band came out of the gate swinging in 2013 with their EP ‘Talk’s Cheap‘, showing us a glimpse of what these guys were able to bring to the table. The following year, in 2014, we saw the release of their first full length album, ‘Quid Pro Quo‘, a wonderful 80’s sounding record with some great songs and definitely a couple of steps up from the EP, proving the band had the chops it would take to be relevant in this genre. Then 2016 came and with it came Maverick’s sophmore album, ‘Big Red‘, a record that saw the band really hitting their stride and completely by-passing the sophmore jinx. They took everything that worked with the EP and ‘Quid Pro Quo‘ and built on it, making it even better.

Mbongwana Star is a newly formed band from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Made up of a sprawling network of shanty-towns and night shelters, day-to-day life in the city is far from easy, but the band don't want sympathy. Tired of pre-conceptions around African music, Mbongwana Star ('Mbongwana' means 'change') are creating their own identity, fusing traditional Congolese rhythms with post punk and electronics inspired by life in the townships around them, "making magic out garbage" says producer and band member Doctor L (who produced Tony Allen's 'Black Voices' album). The result is revolutionary machine. This isn't an African band per se. It's a trans-global barrier-busting sound. Mbongwana comprises members of the hugely popular Staff Benda Bilili.
