A self-titled 2013 EP signalled the arrival of indie-rock quintet Foreign Diplomats as a promising new act, and they now take giant strides with first full-length "Princess Flash". Helmed by ace American producer, Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, the Shins), the album showcases their impressive dynamic range and instrumental ability.

Swedish singer Miah Persson throws her hat into the lyric soprano ring with Sempre Libera, a selection of arias to showcase her talents, recorded live in concert. She has a sweet voice, though not saccharine, and an assured technique. Like Tebaldi, her trill is not her strength (though, unlike that soprano, at least she includes them). However the voice never opens up at the top, where it remains quite polite, and her coloratura, though fluent, is not scintillating.

There is miraculous power in the sacrament of communion.

Massenet’s Werther is one of those masterpieces that were rejected or shunned at the time of their creation. Sketched in the 1880s, the score was turned down by the director of the Opéra-Comique and had to make do with a premiere in German, far from Paris, before finally being heard in Paris in 1893. It gradually established itself as one of the composer’s most personal works, in which he showed himself to be as fine a colourist as he was a master of the art of the ‘motif de rappel’. In adapting Goethe’s novel, Massenet and his librettists gave greater prominence to the character of Charlotte, thus placing the struggle between duty and passion at the centre of the narrative. The role of Werther, originally assigned to a tenor, was also sung by the baritone Mattia Battistini with the composer’s approval. Provided the singer makes skilful use of voix mixte , this version gives the work a melancholy colouring ideal for portraying its hero’s suicidal temperament. Tassis Christoyannis follows this approach in exemplary fashion, opposite the reserved yet moving Charlotte of Véronique Gens. Both singers give the text the preponderant role allotted to it by French operatic tradition.

Blind from the age of two, a prodigiously gifted student, Jean Langlais (1907-91) produced an immense quantity of music. His organ works alone exceed in number those of JS Bach. Many have hardly ever been performed. Perhaps not more than half a dozen works are regularly played or recorded today, which is what makes this new complete survey of his organ music so invaluable, as the authoritative document of a high point in the distinguished lineage of the French organ heritage.
