is the name of three comic book series published by Marvel Comics based on the mutant superhero group The X-Men. The first series, published in 2001, used time travel as a plot device to explore the themes and history of the X-Men, and to resolve some several dangling plotlines. The second series, began in 2009, bears no relation to the 2001 series and is basically intended by its writer, veteran X-Men author Chris Claremont, as a continuation of his storylines for and that were never enacted after his resignation from the title following X-Men #3. Set in an alternate continuity of the Marvel Universe, it ran bi-weekly as a regular title for 24 issues with the final issue released on May 19, 2010. In June 9, 2010, Marvel, with Chris Claremont and Tom Grummett on board, relaunched the 2009 series with a new team and a new storyline, starting again with issue #1. It's the Ultimate Avengers rebooted as , with original writer Mark Millar and artist Carlos Pacheco on board. After the cataclysm things in the Ultimate Universe are again shaking up. Ever since Jeph Loeb presided over the near destruction of Marvel's Ultimate Comics brand with , Marvel has been slowly relaunching Ultimate titles in a bid to restore it to its former lofty, independent, continuity-free status. Thus we have and . Now we have this new bi-monthly ongoing title, written by--and I'm scratching my head--none other than Jeph Loeb. Well, perhaps it's for the better. Maybe he can make amends. Even though there's a kind of somehow-read-it-before patina to issue #1, it is, after all, just the first issue. What does grab you is the detailed, granular artwork by Art Adams. Hope he stays on. And hope Loeb stays clear of that big crossover event mindset prevalent among Marvel writers (I won't mention Bendis--oops!) and focus instead on Jimmy Hudson, or whoever may be the protagonists here. Marvel is putting out more comic books reminiscent of the genre of the thirties and none seems more suited than the Punisher. Although some elements of the regular Punisher story carry over with Frank Castelione, a World War I veteran and single father after his wife died of cancer sometime after the war, --aside from the obvious time difference, which takes place in the late twenties--provides a few surprises and does a good job of differentiating itself from the regular Punisher story.
