Tom Bradley

The Black Bruins chronicles the inspirational lives of five African American athletes who faced racial discrimination as teammates at UCLA in the late 1930s. Best known among them was Jackie Robinson, a four‑star athlete for the Bruins who went on to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball and become a leader in the civil rights movement after his retirement. Joining him were Kenny Washington, Woody Strode, Ray Bartlett, and Tom Bradley—the four played starring roles in an era when fewer than a dozen major colleges had black players on their rosters.

Throughout the 60s, New Zealand had always been three to six months behind overseas music and fashion. By 1970 we were virtually on a par with the overseas scene. There was now a wider musical gap as the rock became heavier and the pop became poppier. The teens that had grown up and lived through the sixties were now young adults and were generally looking for something else, there was a lot to pick from as Rock fused itself with everything from Country to Jazz. Meanwhile the next generation, that had grown up in the shadows of their older brothers and sisters hadn't finished with Pop music just yet while Mums and Dads were were still lapping up anything that could be sung along to.

This album was the result of a crowdfunding campaign which ran in September/October 2017. Over 100 people pledged to help Tamsin get into the studio with a full band to create something wonderful. The album was recorded at Earthworm Amber Studios in Wiltshire, produced by Jon Buckett, engineered by Pete Hewington and mastered by Pete Maher. Guest musicians include Lukas Drinkwater, Lee Alder, Patrick Ward, Jon Buckett and Tom Bradley.
