Topological And Statistical Methods For Complex Data Tackling Largescale Highdimensional And Multivariate Data Spaces

Systems Biology is now entering a mature phase in which the key issues are characterising uncertainty and stochastic effects in mathematical models of biological systems.

The interaction between mathematicians and statisticians reveals to be an effective approach for dealing with actuarial, insurance and financial problems, both in an academic and in an operative perspective. The international conference MAF 2008, held at the University Ca’ Foscari of Venezia (Italy) in 2008, had precisely this purpose, and the collection here published gathers a selection of about the one hundred papers presented at the conference and successively referred and reviewed to this aim. They cover a wide variety of subjects in actuarial, insurance and financial fields, all treated in light of the successful cooperation between the two quantitative approaches.

This volume presents a collection of peer-reviewed contributions arising from StartUp Research: a stimulating research experience in which twenty-eight early-career researchers collaborated with seven senior international professors in order to develop novel statistical methods for complex brain imaging data. During this meeting, which was held on June 25–27, 2017 in Siena (Italy), the research groups focused on recent multimodality imaging datasets measuring brain function and structure, and proposed a wide variety of methods for network analysis, spatial inference, graphical modeling, multiple testing, dynamic inference, data fusion, tensor factorization, object-oriented analysis and others.

The book develops the capabilities arising from the cooperation between mathematicians and statisticians working in insurance and finance fields. It gathers some of the papers presented at the conference MAF2010, held in Ravello (Amalfi coast), and successively, after a reviewing process, worked out to this aim.
