Cuneiform's list of stellar Soft Machine archival releases grew longer in February 2015 with this CD/DVD set documenting the group's appearance at the storied Montreux Jazz Festival on July 4, 1974. Switzerland 1974 captures the Softs taking a huge leap into electric guitar-augmented jazz-rock thanks to formidable axeman Allan Holdsworth's addition to the lineup of keyboardist/reedman Karl Jenkins, drummer John Marshall, bassist Roy Babbington, and keyboardist (and only original bandmember) Mike Ratledge…

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. A bold statement by one of the best underground jazz players of the 70s! Carter Jefferson cut his chops with Art Blakey in the years after Blakey had Billy Harper in the group, and as a loose way of describing him, Jefferson has a very spiritual post-Coltrane sensibility that closely resembles Harper's playing at times. Carter's recorded here in two different groups – one with Terumasa Hino on trumpet, and one with Shunzo Ono on trumpet – and the session has a nice spiritual edge, and lots of good original compositions. Tracks include "Why", "Rise Of Atlantis", "Blues For Wood", and "Changing Trains".

His first album hit the streets in 1976 and initially its arrival caused few heads to turn. Music fans were confused; were these a bunch of punks or 1960s revivalists with a liking for Gene Clark era Byrds? Fortunately, as is so often the case, the UK seemed to 'get it' pretty soon after the record s release there and it reached #24 on the British chart. News traveled West, and a full year after the home turf release Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers entered the Billboard chart. Shortly thereafter second album You're Gonna Get It! was released, and became a hit right away. The rest, as they say, is history. But it s relatively recent history about which any number of books, films and of course superlative albums are readily available for students of this remarkable performer to delve into.

As you drive into Liverpool you will see a sign Liverpool 'Home Of The Beatles', which is absolutely true, but the city's contribution to popular music is far greater than that, covering the years before the Beatles, the Beatle years themselves, and more recent times. The Wall of Fame in Mathew Street salutes Liverpool's number 1 hit-makers and there is plenty of space for further additions. Compiled and annotated by author and BBC Radio Merseyside broadcaster Spencer Leigh, Liverpool Sounds presents 75 tracks which, by and large, relate to the pre-Beatles area. There are great songs, great comedy and great performances, and every track is here for a reason.

Amazon Review by AlanMusicMan
Miller's unique voice seems to me a fascinating blend of cigarette soaked rasp and good-old-boy big-voice manly.
He wrote many of these songs, some of which other people took away and made their own. But what we have here is the best of his output - including those songs that were runaway successes commercially in Europe (King of the road, Little Green Apples etc). I have bought also-ran CDs of Miller's recordings before and some turned out to be the usual pale re-takes, whilst others were collections of his lesser stuff levened with a couple of the hits. This collection is not without clunkers, but for the most part it's his prime material. My favourites? The hits of course, and Engine #9 and the "'comedy' songs such as "My Uncle Use to Love me but She Died" are worth a single listen - though would get old fast! Also, I find myself drawn to his version of Me and Bobby McGee (though Gordon Lightfoot's is always the definitive version of that song for me). If you're only ever going to buy one Roger Miller collection - this one should do you nicely!

Timeshift revisits Britain's railways during the era of public ownership. For all its bad reputation today, the old British Rail boldly transformed a decayed, war-torn Victorian transport network into a system fit for the 20th century. With an eye firmly on the future, steam made way for diesel and electric, new modern stations like Euston were built, and Britain's first high-speed trains introduced. Made with unique access to the British Transport Films archive, this is a warm corrective to the myth of the bad old days of rail, but even it can't hide from the horror that was a British Rail sandwich.
