Run by brothers Hy Weiss and Sam Weiss, New York City's Old Town Records label and its subsidiary imprint Barry Records specialized in deep soul and R&B sounds during their run in the 1950s and '60s. While they were based on the East Coast, Old Town's best material was very much in the vein of Southern soul, and Heavy Soul: Old Town & Barry's Deep Down & Dirty Sides collects two dozen of the stronger recordings they released between 1962 and 1969. The Weiss brothers were not above lifting arrangement and production styles from other popular artists of the day, and "Sugar" by Bobby & Betty Lou sounds like a lost classic from Stax's glory days, while Lester Young (no relation to "Pres") is a dead ringer for Otis Redding on a couple of cuts, both in his performance and the work of his backing band. But what these tunes might sometimes lack in originality, they more than make up for in pure passion, and Bobby Long's driving "Heartbreak Avenue," the anguished "Nobody Knows" (Bobby Byrd recording undercover as "the Flambeaus"), John Standberry, Jr.'s slinky "Marie," and the wild and funky "Dirty Old Man" from Irene Reid are superb examples of '60s soul obscurities that deserve wider circulation. While a few cuts sound as if they were rescued from old vinyl pressings, for the most part the remastering on this set sounds quite good, and John Ridley's liner notes are informative and well researched. The concept behind this album, although I do not consider it a “concept album”, is its pure form of honesty, rawness, self-expression and the subconscious reality of everyday to day life. What is it that your subconscious emotions tell your conscious self/mind? How do you feel? Why do you not always express it openly?

Dirty Red & The Soul Shakers are a modern day powerhouse, rock n blues band. Built on old-school influences and mutual love for down and dirty blues. A dangerously tight Rhythm section centered around Forrest Worrell on drums (formerly with Watermelon Slim & The Workers), John Stendel on bass, resulting in a “shake your money maker” grooving backbone. Add in killer rock n blues guitar player, Ike Lamb (formerly of Watermelon Slim & The Workers) and then finally center stage, you have the always entertaining vocalist, Eric McDaniel (Dirty Red) for soul-filled vocals & harmonica, reminiscent of Omar & The Howlers. Now, you have one heck of blues party in the making. The Soul Shakers, perform original songs, and the classics, often influenced by the blues giants such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Junior Wells, Little Walter. You get the picture; it’s a blues party baby!

Collection includes 9 studio albums, 2 live albums and 4 remixes & compilation albums by British sophisti-pop/jazz-pop group Swing Out Sister, best known worldwide for the 1986 song "Breakout". Other hits include "Surrender", "Twilight World", "Waiting Game" and a remake of the Eugene Record soul composition "Am I the Same Girl?"

While not as well-known as his iconic lysergic western El Topo, which became one of the major midnight movies of the '70s, The Holy Mountain is arguably the definitive work from Chilean/Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, a visually dazzling and gloriously confounding story of the search for spiritual enlightenment. While it's all but impossible to describe what happens in The Holy Mountain, given its emphasis on surreal visuals over narrative, it's a cult film for the best reasons – love it or hate it, it's a remarkable and thoroughly individual accomplishment – and the soundtrack album, featuring Jodorowsky's original score, is an eclectic and interesting listen in its own right. The music sways from rock ("Psychedelic Weapons") to esoteric folk music ("Pissed and Passed Out") to subtle tone poems ("Violence of the Lambs") to grand-scale orchestral themes ("Christs 4 Sale"), with plenty of room for lyrical musical backdrops ("Communion"), a dash of vintage dance music ("A Walk in the Park"), and even some Tuvan throat singing ("Trance Mutation").
