This recording represents an historic and unique synthesis of the ancient and the contemporary featuring a world premiere recording in the spectacular ambience of the Geghard Monastery in Armenia.
The Orchestra’s Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, American-Armenian conductor Aram Gharabekian, has brought the NCOA into a new era of artistic triumphs and international acclaim since his appointment in 1997. For their outstanding achievements in Armenia and in other parts of the world, Maestro Gharabekian and NCOA have been duly recognized in a proclamation by the United States Congress and televised features on CNN Special and Russian Kultura TV Channel.
The two substantial works for violin and orchestra presented in this recording were both composed for major Russian soloists; the Concerto of 1940 for David Oistrakh and the Concerto-Rhapsody of 1961 for Leonid Kogan. Both draw on folk themes from the composer’s native Armenia and both are packed with emotion-laden Slavic moodiness.
The Embassy of Lithuania in Armenia presents a special edition of the collection of works by two outstanding Lithuanian composers entitled Winter Sketches: Eight Preludes, Two Nocturnes, Two Mazurkas, Two Lithuanian Folk Songs, Moment Musicaux, Humoresque by Mikolajus Čiurlionis and Little Suite, Winter Sketches by Balys Dvarionas. The CD was released in July 2014.
