Giuseppe Sinopoli projects Liszt’s “Mephistopheles” with such unrelenting urgency that he could as well be fighting the devil in person. True, the recorded balance keeps the strings fairly close at hand (the actual sound image is not dissimilar to EMI’s on their Masur/Leipzig Liszt series), but the playing itself has real drive and panache, frequently throwing caution to the winds in pursuit of maximum spontaneity (as regards tempo, Sinopoli beats Bernstein to the finishing post by no less than ten minutes).

Peter Schreier’s keen interest in the oratorio has earned him an international reputation as a concert singer. Schreier has set standards in the interpretation of Bach’s Oratorios, Passions and Cantatas, notably the parts of the Evangelists, that remain a challenge for every tenor today. He has also won acclaim as an incomparable performer of the Lied. His Schubert was especially regarded for its highly expressive projection and shaping of the words. Peter Schreier sang primarily on East German recordings, many of which are re-released on CD on the Berlin Classics label, and for the Philips label. Numerous records, radio and television productions attest to the multifarious talents of a singer.

These head notes take some explaining. Leave Me Alone is presented twice: the original song, sung by Angelika Kirchschlager, plus a version for cello and piano played by Jan Vogler. In the op. 55 Gypsy Songs, she sings Nos. 2, 5, and 6, while he plays the other four. Ms Kirchschlager sings both Stephen Foster ballads; Wilt Thou Be Gone, Love? includes a cello solo, as well. Pianist Helmut Deutsch accompanies it all.
