This is volume three in the Doric String Quartets ongoing exploration of Haydns complete string quartets, already highly praised by major international media and regularly supported by concerts in the worlds greatest venues, from Carnegie and Wigmore halls to the Royal Concertgebouw. The Op. 64 Quartets date from a time of great change for Haydn, compared with the previously recorded Op. 20 and Op. 76. Not only was Haydn preparing for the greatest adventure of his life what would turn out to be the first of two trips to London at the time of their composition, in 1790, but they also appeared under a new publisher, Leopold Kozeluchs firm Magazin de musique.

To most concertgoers, the composer, clarinetist and pedagogue Carl Baermann (1811-1885) is certainly not very well known. To every clarinetist, however, he is an absolute ‘must’. As an internationally renowned clarinet virtuoso of the 19th century, Baermann created a benchmark with his famous method for clarinet, still indispensible today because of its musical quality.

Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and Vasily Petrenko offer here the third and final release in a series of recordings of Richard Strauss’s orchestral music. On this CD the listener is presented with the tone poems “Eine Alpensinfonie” and “Tod und Verklärung”, works that long have been part of the Oslo Philharmonic’s repertoire.

The present release comprises two works by Russian composers of differing generations, in music which has long been central to the repertoire of composer and conductor ?lvaro Cassuto who is heard conducting the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra. Even before the Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet had made it to the stage, selections were heard in concert on both sides of the Atlantic, and various sequences continue to feature prominently in the orchestral repertoire. Although these sometimes take the guise of one of the three orchestral suites, it has become more common to select freely from across these or even from the overall ballet. Establishing dramatic and musical continuity within this context is more difficult than might be supposed, to which end Cassuto had devised his own selection on this present recording.

This programme of four colourful, contrasting but complementary works for small orchestra celebrates the lighter side of four twentieth-century Italian composers, centring on Alfredo Casella’s Divertimento for Fulvia, composed for his young daughter. Casella’s friend Gian Francesco Malipiero wrote Oriente immaginario (Imaginary Orient) for a Futurist play by Achille Ricciardi (1884–1923). Franco Donatoni once called his simply-titled Musica (Music) ‘kind of Schoenberg gone a bit neoclassical’—but also with a great sense of humour—while Giorgio Federico Ghedini’s Concerto grosso is a twentieth-century tribute to both Bach and Beethoven.

Following the publication of Carl Orff's Gisei, CPO now release its sister work: Felix Weingartner's one-act Die Dorfschule (The Village School) a work also based on the plot of Terakoya. Weingartner's masterfully crafted realization of the ancient Japanese drama centring on a village school, can now be contrasted with young Carl Orff's tentative early version.
