Here's an educated guess that road tapes are the second most popular type of homemade mix cassette. (One suspects that old off-road standard–the bedroom mix–would clock in at No. 1.) Hot Rods & Custom Classics is Rhino Records' big daddy of road mixes: four discs housed in an elaborate box that includes a scrupulously assembled 66-page booklet, a catalog of hot-rod accessories, a strip of decals, and even a set of fuzzy dice for your own resto rod. Musically, this collection is all over the road, ranging from selections that seem like they were written with one foot on the accelerator (Johnny Bond's "Hot Rod Lincoln," Chuck Berry's "Maybelline," War's "Low Rider") to more tangential tracks that might force you to pull into a rest stop (Hank Williams's mournful "Lost Highway," Rod Stewart's "Gasoline Alley"). Spanning multiple genres and five decades, Custom Classics is enlivened by film and ad snippets, including a public-safety message from high-speed-crash victim James Dean on, naturally, safe highway driving. –Steven Stolder

Nice compilation of old rock and pop songs… These songs are indispensable at all parties of the somewhat older generation and are great fun listening to the old classics, some of which you haven't heard for ages. Highly recommended.

Now we have an album dedicated to being alone, not loneliness as Dorn explains his in liner notes. But with this play list, the line between the two gets really blurred. Whatever, this is a comprehensive collection of tracks by the top jazz luminaries for albums they cut for the now defunct Muse label and all of them are outstanding regardless of the mood you're in. The Sonny Stitt performance of "Sweet and Lovely" is one of the album's highlights as his sax works in, out, under, and through the piano of Duke Jordan and Sam Jones' bass. The credits list Stitt playing a soprano, but it's the alto he has in his hands for introspective blowing of this classic standard. Wallace Roney is the ostensible leader on "Lost." But his Miles Davis-like trumpet is subordinated to the classical oriented piano of Jacky Terrasson who penned this song.

There simply may not be a better reggae label around than England's Blood & Fire, a company co-founded by noted reggae critic Steve Barrow and Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall. The fact that the best reggae label in the world deals strictly in reissues from the 1970s could be construed as something of an indictment of the current state of the art, but that doesn't make Blood & Fire's releases any less crucial. This sampler focuses on the many exquisite dub albums the label has issued over the last few years (its title comes from Lee "Scratch" Perry: "Some people call it dub. I call it x-ray music"). Included are dub versions of songs by Horace Andy ("Dub There"), the Morwells ("Morpheus Special"), and the Congos ("Noah Sugar Pan"), among others, but the album's best feature is the variety of producers represented: there's hardly an important reggae producer missing, so the neophyte can enlighten him- or herself by comparing the styles of King Tubby, Prince Jammy, Lee Perry, Jojo Hookim, and Errol Thompson. It's tempting to say something like "if you only own one dub album, make it this one, " but it would be much better to let this compilation guide your deeper exploration of this fascinating, and sometimes unsettling, musical world.
