Berkeley’s first opera, Nelson, was put on at Sadler’s Wells in 1954. The others were performed by the English Opera Group which had been founded by the young Benjamin Britten, Joan Cross, Eric Crozier and Peter Pears in 1946. In the same year as the Nelson premiere Berkeley’s first one?acter, A Dinner Engagement, featured at Aldeburgh. Aldeburgh was also the scene of Ruth in 1956 and Castaway in 1967. Each work inhabits its own world, and each finds Berkeley’s musical imagination delivering new sounds to match the drama.

It doesn't take much rhetorical muscle to argue that science fiction was one of the dominant genre artforms of the 20th century, from the Lumiere brothers to Spielberg, from Wells and Conan Doyle to Asimov, Bradbury, and Clarke. This nearly exhaustive, lavishly packaged collection documents the genre's musical legacy across virtually every major genre on its five discs and 113 tracks. Each volume is divided by sub-genre–Movie Themes, TV Themes, Pop, Incidental/Lounge, Novelty–with each containing both the obvious contenders and some delightful surprises. The film disc alone contains a wealth of rarities, including music from Them!, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The Andromeda Strain, Fantastic Voyage, and other notables. The packaging is brilliant kitsch: a 6.5-inch square, metal-lidded cube emblazoned on three sides with suitably tacky 3-D images of–you guessed it!–a floating brain. But the profusely illustrated, hard-bound, 200-page book (designed to emulate the Big Little Books of the 1940s and '50s) that's included gives the subject its serious due, with an introduction by Ray Bradbury and contributions from an array of other notables, including Forrest J. Director Jonathan Demme has developed a reputation for assembling especially interesting soundtracks to such previous movies as Something Wild and Married to the Mob, but he's never gotten quite such high-powered talent to work for him as he has on this collection of songs from Philadelphia. Topping the list, of course, is Bruce Springsteen's Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning gold Top Ten hit "Streets of Philadelphia" (even if it seems to be as much about homelessness as about AIDS, the movie's subject). But also included is Neil Young's "Philadelphia," arguably a better song, and a new number by Peter Gabriel, "Lovetown." Those are the major contributions, although Spin Doctors do a nice version of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," and Indigo Girls' take on Danny Whitten's "I Don't Want to Talk About It" is equally enjoyable. And there's the excerpt from the opera Andrea Chenier by Maria Callas that makes such a striking scene in the movie (minus Tom Hanks' commentary), and a piece of Howard Shore's score.
