A few of the songs on this collection stand out. Billy Sherwood & Alan White & Chris Squire's rendition of Comfortably Numb, Tommy Shaw & Tony Levin & Edgar Winter's take on Money, and Us and Them as versioned by Out of Phase. Each artist sticks as close to Pink Floyds original intent, but adds some interesting tidbits that are nice to listen to.

The material on CD 1 dates from the latter half of Artie Shaw’s career as a bandleader, which ended with his retirement in 1954. Always presenting tasteful and often unusually deep interpretations of big-band jazz and dance music, and featuring his exquisite and frequently profound clarinet improvisations, Shaw’s career climaxed in his rise to superstar status as the most popular musician in North America at the height of the Swing Era in 1939.

The Wizard of Oz a musical with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum and music by Paul Tietjens premiered on June 16, 1902, at the Grand Opera House in Chicago. It was an instant hit and made stars of David Montgomery (the Tin Woodman) and Fred Stone (the Scarecrow). On January 21, 1903 the show opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York. It ran for nine months and set out on the road with a second company right on its heels. The show toured, came back to New York, toured, and returned to New York again many times until finally disbanding around 1911. Stock and amateur companies continued to present it into the 1930s when it was overshadowed by the classic MGM film starring Judy Garland.

In December 1964, after the brief period of liberalism following the Party Congress of 1961, the Krushchev regime [in the Soviet Union] cracked down on the playing of jazz, attacking it as “decadent”, as it had been called in Stalin’s time. It was an ideal opportunity for the Radio [Liberty] to fill the vacuum with a series of Russian programs on jazz.
