Van Halen is an American hard rock band formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972. From 1974 until 1985, the band consisted of guitarist Eddie Van Halen, vocalist David Lee Roth, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Michael Anthony. The band went on to become major stars, and by the early 1980s they were one of the most successful rock acts of the time…

Blending the literate and expressive lyrical style of a classic singer/songwriter with music rooted in indie rock, Joseph Arthur is a well-respected songwriter and performer whose work has impressed critics as well as artists such as Peter Gabriel and Michael Stipe. Arthur's original goal was to become a hotshot bass player, but exposure to Bob Dylan and Kurt Cobain prompted him to take up songwriting, and in 1996, he self-released an EP that made its way to Peter Gabriel, who signed Arthur to his Real World label. 1997's challenging Big City Secrets and 2000's rootsy Come to Where I'm From impressed critics and discriminating listeners, and 2004's Our Shadows Will Remain found him digging even deeper into his confessional tales. With 2007's Let's Just Be, Arthur launched his own record label, Lonely Astronaut, giving him greater control over his music as he recorded idiosyncratic projects such as 2013's The Ballad of Boogie Christ and 2014's Lou (the latter a collection of Lou Reed covers).

Trav'lin Light collects 15 of the radio transcriptions Peggy Lee recorded between 1946 and 1949, with a quintet including her husband Dave Barbour and George Van Eps on guitar, pianist Hal Schaefer, drummer Nick Fatool, and bassist Phil Stephens. Worlds away from the heavily orchestrated studio dates of the day, these relaxed sessions produced some incredible music more akin to a live performance at an intimate nightclub than a hit. The supposed impermanence of these recordings (they were designed to be used only once or twice as bumpers for radio stations) belies the fact that these songs are among the best she ever recorded, and though the sound quality is a shade inferior to her studio sessions, Trav'lin Light is of inestimable historical value. ~ AllMusic Review by John Bush

Although Robert Lamm, singer/songwriter/pianist of Chicago, has revealed a taste for Latin music among many other styles in his songs (e.g., "Another Rainy Day in New York City"), this solo album is a considerable departure for him. It is what it says it is, a collection of bossa nova arrangements on which Lamm serves as singer. The other major force in the project is John Van Eps, who plays piano, percussion, bass, and "orchestral programming," in addition to arranging and producing.

Romance, Heartbreak, Love, Life. Great singing by a familiar and contemporary voice…this is a brilliant collage of music performed by Robert Lamm. Every song displays strong lead vocals, superb harmonies, and amazing delivery. "Too Many Voices" is actually a far stronger album than its shorter, previous incarnation, "In My Head". The six new songs add more organic textures (Schitzoid in particular rocks!) to balance out the beefed up, contemporary electronic production. The new running order, in particular, makes this album a better listen than the old version. The songs, of course, are all up to Robert’s high standards, and the guest spots from Phoebe Snow, Carl Wilson, et al are great-added treats.

Each box contains 25 slipcase CDs, a booklet (up to 186 pages) and an index. The booklets contain extensive notes (Eng/Fr) with recording dates and line-ups. 31 hours of music in each box, totalling 1677 tracks Each track has been restored and mastered from original sources. The only reason I can think of for there not yet being a review of these four boxed sets, is that those who own them are just too busy having one hell of a blast listening to them. Some people moan about the 50 year copyright law for audio recordings in Europe, but without it this highly entertaining, eye-opening and educational undertaking could never have taken place. These 100 discs (spread over four boxed sets of 25 discs) tell the story of jazz from 1898 to 1959.

Though Robert Lamm's second solo album, Life Is Good In My Neighborhood, was released in 1995, 21 years after his first, it sounded like it might have been made as much as a decade earlier, implying either that Lamm was out of touch with current musical trends or that he'd been working on it for a long time. But his third album, In My Head, following a mere four years later, sounded much more contemporary.
