According to Berlioz, Spontini was – after Gluck – the greatest genius of French music to pave the way for the Romantic era. And it may well be that the little-known Olympie, premiered in 1819 and subsequently revived in 1826 under the modified title Olimpie, had a greater influence than we have hitherto imagined on the massive upheaval that was to set French opera on the path of the modern ‘grand opéra’. From start to finish, this finely polished score, with its astonishing orchestration, is full of spectacular effects that clearly look forward to Les Troyens of Berlioz.

Même si les fans ne trouveront là aucun inédit, par rapport à l'intégrale sortie en 2004, et s'il y a parmi les titres quelques grands absents ( bébé comme la vie, Hong Kong star, Besoin d'amour et quelque chose de Tennessee pourtant chantée à Pleyel en 1994, les uns contre les autres et la légende de Jimmy de l'Olympia 1996) qui auraient pu être intégrés puisque 6 titres reviennent deux fois (la déclaration, diégo, musique, viens je t'emmène, tout pour la musique et Ella - même si ce dernier est dans une interprétation tellement différente que sa deuxième utilisation se justifie).

Dalida was one of the most important female singers in the history of French music, yet she is hardly known in Britain or America. Her career spanned 32 years from 1956 to 1987, when she committed suicide. She recorded for the Barclay label until 1970, when she moved to her brother's label, Orlando. This collection contains (as far as I know) every song she recorded for Barclay in it's original form (no remixes here). Another massive boxed set is available covering all her Orlando recordings. The CD's that make up the two boxed sets were all made available separately.
