The solar system most of us grew up with included nine planets, with Mercury closest to the sun and Pluto at the outer edge. Then, in 2005, astronomer Mike Brown made the discovery of a lifetime: a 10th planet, Eris, slightly bigger than Pluto. But instead of its resulting in one more planet being added to our solar system, Brown's find ignited a firestorm of controversy that riled the usually sedate world of astronomy and launched him into the public eye.

When it was suggested to Jared Putnam that his new recording, Brontosaurus on Pluto, indicates a wonderfully imaginative and possibly quite sick mind at work, he responded, “I prefer to think of my mind as possibly imaginative and wonderfully quite sick.”

Orbit Pluto first came to Marina in a dream as a symbol of compassion for those on the margins of society. A watery spectrum of sound influenced by as many genres as there are genders, Orbit Pluto is a love letter to those marginalized by race, gender identity, class, disability, and other oppressions. Meant to be listened to from either end, the album flows instead from the center song West of the Sun/East of the Moon and radiates outward a commitment to a life-long journey to radical self-love and liberation. The declaration "This is a love song for people like me who are still learning to love our whole selves" can be heard in the beginning track Castor/Pollux and end track I'm Whole.
