He was born in New York on 27th September 1898 and his father, a milliner by trade, hoped that his son would follow him into that trade. However, from an early age Vincent’s greater interest in the piano became obvious and to finance more advanced studies in his chosen instrument he first took employment as a salesman for a finance company in Wall Street.
