In the eighteenth century, the sonata model established by the published works of Arcangelo Corelli conquered all of musical Europe. Throughout the century, transcriptions of his music were published for every instrument, and the viola da gamba was no exception. The most interesting collection is that held at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris (MS Vm7 6308), which presents the twelve sonatas of Corelli’s op.5 in transcription for viola da gamba.

The most interesting collection is that held at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris (MS Vm7 6308), which presents the twelve sonatas of Corelli’s op.5 in transcription for viola da gamba. Although it is preserved in Paris, certain stylistic elements suggest that this transcription originated in the German-speaking region of Europe, with particular reference to composers such as Johannes Schenck, Konrad Höffler or Gottfried Finger, whose works were deeply influenced by Corelli’s style. It is to this repertory that Teodoro Bau, winner of the 2021 Ma Festival Bruges competition, devotes his recording.

The three sonatas by Bach of this album are likely to rank among the most famous and most performed compositions for viola da gamba, and they represent one of the tops of the literature for this instrument. Nevertheless for this recording was used the viola da braccio, according to the practice of the Baroque era which precedes and accompanies the decline of the viola da gamba. These pieces are composed as a trio sonata, a favourite genre by the Maestro. They are mainly based on polyphonic writing, in which no instrument prevails over the other. In some pieces the organ was used in place of the harpsichord, a choice of the performers to explore new varieties of timbre and off er diff erent instrumental colours.

This musical project was born in the very first meeting with Luca Guglielmi, the night before a concert in Geneva when, through the music of J. S. Bach, a sincere human and musical affinity was revealed that needed neither words nor looks. Now, at a distance of a time made fluid by the hours of listening to the tracks, I see that we had met in Bach's profound italianness, in the singing of the melodies that danced in counterpoint, in the rhythmic undulation of his writing, but above all in the composer's human and eternal spirituality. Although in the manuscripts the three Sonatas for Viola da Gamba are accompanied by the harpsichord, we imagined the Viola da Gamba conversing with different keyboard instruments that Bach had at his disposal: Matthias Griewisch copy of a Mietke harpsichord (kindly loaned by the Bach Museum in Leipzig), Kerstin Schwarz copy of a Silbermann piano and the organ in the Frankenstein Dorfkirche, built by Gottfried Silbermann in 1753, few years after Bach's death.

Carl Friedrich Abel capitalised on a musical pedigree with strong links to the Bach family. Abel’s father, Christian Friedrich, had been the chamber cello and viol player in Cöthen where J.S. Bach was appointed Capellmeister, and the two developed a close professional and personal relationship. When Abel Sr died in 1737, Carl Friedrich was sent to live with the Bach family, who had by then moved to Leipzig. There, he had direct access to the grand master of invention and composition, and from him he learned the skills he would use to dazzle audiences in a career of improvised performances on the viola da gamba and harpsichord.

Sergei Istomin and Viviana Sofronitsky made an accurate and unconventional choice of instruments for this recording of Bach’s Sonatas for Viola da gamba: a brilliant and resonant viol built by Jacob Stainer in 1655 and a Paul McNulty copy of a 1749 Silbermann fortepiano. The result is a unique, invigorating and captivating blend of tonal colours that conjure up a unique sound which emphasizes the melodic qualities of these famous works.
