Trumpeter Wallace Roney avoids the standard repertoire altogether on this CD, playing pieces by Pat Metheny, the Beatles, Egberto Gismonti, Jaco Pastorius and even Dolly Parton among others but, try as hard as he may, he still sounds like Miles Davis every time he hits a long tone or plays a doubletime passage. Backed by a small orchestra that mostly interprets Gil Goldstein arrangements, Roney is the main soloist throughout this interesting ballad-dominated set.~ AllMusic

Trumpeter Wallace Roney's debut as a leader at the age of 26 occurred when he was a member of Tony Williams' Quintet. In fact, Williams is the drummer on this quintet set which also features tenor saxophonist Gary Thomas, pianist Mulgrew Miller and bassist Charnett Moffett. The group performs originals by Roney, Williams and two by Cindy Blackman, plus the standard "Blue in Green." The music is essentially advanced hard bop, with Roney as usual often sounding a bit tonewise like his hero Miles Davis.

On his seventh date as a leader, trumpeter Wallace Roney is clearly shaking the comparisons to Miles Davis, even while covering some of the same ground as the late jazz legend. Backed by his talented wife, Geri Allen (who is a gifted composer and adventurous bandleader herself), bassist Christian McBride, and first-call drummer Kenny Washington, Roney's fresh look at Davis' "Solar" is well worth investigating, while the spirited rendition of Charlie Parker's "Ah-Leu-Cha" features Washington driving the leader and guest tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, while adding some wild arco bass by McBride.

Wallace Roney's Prototype marks the trumpeter's debut for HighNote after a series of mid-'90s albums for Warner Bros. whose productions were apparently fraught with arguments and compromises. The mood and scope of the writing makes you wonder why the Warners brass didn't trust the trumpet player and leave him to his own devices. On the other hand, Prototype has a definite modern feel, fastening 1960s Miles Davis ambience to modern R&B and technology. Roney and his tenor and soprano playing brother Antoine creating stunning solos on the driving "Then and Now" and funky-but-ominous "Cyberspace."

Trumpeter Wallace Roney sounds poignant and fabulous throughout the eight tracks on his latest release. His lines on "What's New" and "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" are full and gorgeous, while his soloing on "Woody'n You" and "Time After Time" has warmth, intensity and edge. Alto saxophonist Antonio Hart chimes in with equal facility and spark, while Geri Allen shows that she is just as outstanding as an accompanist on standards and hard bop as in trios or as a leader. ~ AllMusic Review by Ron Wynn

The Tony Williams Quintet recorded four studio albums between 1986 and '91: Civilization, Angel Street, Native Heart and The Story Of Neptune. Each album was distinguished by Tony's distinctive, melodic compositions, unique arranging and extraordinary drumming. Roney, Pierce and Miller, all outstanding and concise soloists, quickly developed an empathy that grew with each album. This was a band that made Tony immensely happy. He enjoyed the company of his sidemen and loved the way they interpreted his music. And from 1986 to '94, he had a consistent musical outlet for his music. Throughout a career filled with achievement and innovation, this body of work remains among his most satisfying music.

After sharing Grammy nominations in three categories earlier this year (two for production on Kenny Garrett’s album “Seeds From the Underground” and one co-writing of a song on Denise Donatelli’s album “Soul Shadows”), returning to playing piano after a year-long hiatus due for medical reasons, and releasing his new album “Born to Be Blue,” Brown may be on the verge of getting the recognition that in-the-know jazz lovers have known he deserves.
