This Mosaic edition of Tony`s later Blue Note years w/ his postbop band (1985 - 1992) compiles 5 cd`s - 'Foreign Intrigue','Civilization','Angel Street','Native Heart' and 'The Story Of Neptune', and while it may seem pricey, it`s now cheaper to buy this box than to purchase the titles individually, as they have risen since his passing (2/23/1997). This was a great band and showcased Tony`s skills as a composer as well as reaffirming his status as the most defining drummer in Jazz. It clearly indicates how strong an influence Art Blakey`s band was to Tony`s early development (he used to sit in w/ Art`s band when he was only 15 years old when Blakey`s group played in Boston, Tony`s hometown).

This is possibly pianist Geri Allen's most advanced release. […] Allen performs three atmospheric piano solos, including a version of Ron Carter's "Little Waltz" […]. There is a duet with percussionist Cyro Baptista, two duets with altoist Ornette Coleman (who through the years has almost never recorded as a sideman), and four numbers in which Allen is joined by her husband trumpeter Wallace Roney (two of which also include Baptista). […] The music is mostly avant-garde, but purposeful and logical in its own fashion. Well worth several listens. ~Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Having established himself as an imaginative technical wizard in the forefront of the fusion movement during the 1980's, guitarist Mike Stern has left an indelible mark on the way the instrument is utilized in the jazz idiom. But there would be an unforeseen event that would test his physical and emotional will to overcome adversity. In July of 2016 Stern suffered a serious accident when he tripped over construction debris leaving his apartment in New York City. This led to severe fractures in both arms, and critical nerve damage extending to fingers in his right hand. After several operations and intense therapy, he was back on the guitar, and Trip proves he has not lost any of his amazing musical prowess.

Now we have an album dedicated to being alone, not loneliness as Dorn explains his in liner notes. But with this play list, the line between the two gets really blurred. Whatever, this is a comprehensive collection of tracks by the top jazz luminaries for albums they cut for the now defunct Muse label and all of them are outstanding regardless of the mood you're in. The Sonny Stitt performance of "Sweet and Lovely" is one of the album's highlights as his sax works in, out, under, and through the piano of Duke Jordan and Sam Jones' bass. The credits list Stitt playing a soprano, but it's the alto he has in his hands for introspective blowing of this classic standard. Wallace Roney is the ostensible leader on "Lost." But his Miles Davis-like trumpet is subordinated to the classical oriented piano of Jacky Terrasson who penned this song.

Jazz for When You're Alone as released by Savoy Jazz in 2003 is basically an expanded version of the Jazz for When You're Alone disc released by 32 Jazz in 1999. Instead of one disc, there are now two, which increases the total number of tracks from 11 to 17. The new tracks are drawn from the same source as those on the original release, the catalog of the Muse label from the '70s, '80s, and '90s. Jazz giants like Houston Person, Willis Jackson, Donald Byrd, and Kenny Burrell all contribute tracks and brush shoulders with jazz middleweights like Wallace Roney, Vincent Herring, and Carol Welsman. As the title suggests, the songs are relaxed and the mood is mellow and reflective. Although the songs date from well-beyond jazz's peak years, the performances are uniformly solid and the disc is a nice, low-priced collection of mood music.
