Walk Right Back The Everly Brothers on Warner Brothers

The Everly Brothers Fils d'un musicien et animateur radio, Don Everly (né le 1er février 1937 à Brownie dans le Kentucky) et Phil Everly (né le 19 janvier 1939 à Chicago, dans l’Illinois), décident de se produire en duo dès 1955, sous le nom The Everly Brothers. L'année suivante, un ami de la famille, le guitariste Chet Atkins, obtient pour eux un contrat avec la maison de disques Columbia qui publie le simple « Keep-a-Lovin’ Me ». L’essai n’étant pas concluant, ils signent ensuite chez Cadence Records, le label avec lequel ils connaissent leurs premiers succès : « Bye Bye Love » (n° 2 aux États-Unis), « Wake Up Little Susie » (n° 1) en 1957, réunis dans leur premier album homonyme, puis « All I Have to Do Is Dream » (n° 1), « Bird Dog » (n° 2) en 1958 ou « (Till) I Kissed You » (n° 4) l’année suivante.

'Hey Doll Baby' is a remastered 17-track compilation that collects some of the lesser-known, buried treasures in the Everly Brothers' rich catalog with songs assembled by Adria Petty, Tom Petty's daughter, who worked closely with both Everly families on the project, with help from Phil's widow Patti and son Jason, who provided track-by-track commentary for the liner notes, as well as Don Everly, prior to his passing last summer, and his widow Adela.

There are few sounds in American popular music more thrilling and sublimely satisfying than the harmonies of Don and Phil Everly, the Everly Brothers, and this album features them singing a dozen great songs that have come to be associated with them. So what's the problem? Between 1957 and 1960, the Everly Brothers recorded for Cadence Records, where they enjoyed a run of hits with such songs as "Bye Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie," "All I Have to Do Is Dream," "Bird Dog," "Til I Kissed You," and "Devoted to You." In 1960, Don and Phil left Cadence for a more lucrative deal at Warner Bros. Records, where they continued to score hit records.

The third and last of Bear Family's Everly box sets, Chained to a Memory 1966-1972, chronicles the final act of the Everly Brothers' prime years, beginning just after the duo started to shake their mid-'60s doldrums and documenting their subsequent revival as they shifted to country-rock, the sound they continued to mine until their acrimonious split in 1973. This is a weighty set, containing a hefty hardcover book and a bonus DVD in addition to ten CDs, but the extra length isn't merely Bear Family's modus operandi – it's needed to bring an end to a story this epic. Indeed, the music on Chained to a Memory is in some ways some of the most interesting the Everlys ever produced. As their star began to fade, the Everlys reconnected with their country beginnings, quite deliberately titling their 1968 makeover, Roots, finding a wealth of new sounds and sentiments within country-rock. They exhibited a keen ear for material from emerging songwriters, and they wrote some terrific new songs, songs that exhibited the widening chasm between the two brothers who shared a sound and continued to harmonize beautifully together even as their sensibilities began to drift apart.

Phil and Don Everly were unparalleled rock and roll trailblazers and country rock pioneers. Their timeless harmonies made them one of the first superstar acts in music history and profoundly impacted generations of artists to follow.

Opening with their debut Warner Bros. session from March '60, 'The Price Of Fame' chronologically collects every master made for the label up through November ’65.
