Water Emory Gayle

One of the most popular and widely recognized female country singers of her era, Crystal Gayle supported her trademark, nearly floor-length hair with a supple voice, a flair for ballads, and a crossover-friendly country-pop style that netted her the occasional mainstream hit. Gayle was born Brenda Gail Webb in Paintsville, Kentucky, in 1951; her older sister was future superstar Loretta Lynn, though Lynn had already left home by the time Brenda was born.

In a classical pose, tenor saxophonist Charles Gayle is playing his favorite piece (the instrument is meant, please) like, say, Sonny Rollins or Charles Mc Pherson. Actually, we would have to say Archie Shepp first of all, but to label Gayle as a late-career Archie Shepp would not be entirely fair. Nevertheless: with the hard, jagged, rather rebellious jazz of the post-fusion era, we are quite well located here.

Crystal Gayle will revisit the country roots that run in her family with You Don’t Know Me, a collection of familiar country standards that includes the title track, which was penned by Hall of Fame songwriter Cindy Walker and popularized by Eddy Arnold in 1955. Available September 6th, the LP was co-produced by Gayle and her son, Christos Gatzimos, and includes a trio performance of the Porter Wagoner-Dolly Parton classic, “Put It Off Until Tomorrow,” featuring Gayle and her sisters, Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue Wright. Her first all-new album in almost 16 years, You Don’t Know Me also features covers of songs popularized by Connie Smith (“Ribbon of Darkness”), Faron Young (Willie Nelson’s “Hello Walls”), and Buck Owens.
