This is one of the rarest record dates led by Ray Nance, recorded in 1971 for BASF with pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Ron Mathewson, and drummer Daniel Humair. Nance pulls all the stops in showcasing his talents, opening with an obscure Ellington composition, 'He Huffed 'n' Puffed', with the leader delivering its jive vocal with his trademark humor in his hoarse voice. His swinging violin is heard on 'Some of These Days' and his exotic original 'Wild Child,' written shortly before the session began, which finds him moving away from swing and closer to the post-bop sounds of John Coltrane. His muted horn and campy vocal on 'Tangerine' and open horn on 'Struttin' With Some Barbecue' are also highlights of what evidently was his final recording as a leader prior to his death in 1976. This long out of print LP is worth an extensive search.

Label: Trippin' n' Rhythm | Release Year: 2017

Flugelhorn and trumpet really rock her boat. Cindy Bradley left some imposing traces in the sand of the smooth jazz genre with Just A Little Bit (2007), Bloom (2009), Unscripted (2011) and Bliss (2014). Natural (2017) is her fourth album in connection with the label Trippin' n' Rhythm. The set opens with Girl Talk, a funky exchange of blows between Cindy on trumpet and Paula Atherton on sax. Sax veteran Paula had invited Cindy on her fourth album Ear Candy (2015) and the opening track is according to the principle of mutuality a great thank-you with positive effect.

In 2003, Steve Hackett met the Hungarian jazz fusion septet Djabe and contributed to their album Táncolnak A Kazlak. They got on so well that they played shows together whenever possible. In 2016, Djabe and Hackett got together for improvised recording sessions in the parsonage of a Sardinian cathedral. The flow of ideas and easy rapport netted the widely celebrated Life Is a Journey: The Sardinia Tapes. A year later, the guitarist and band took the material on tour, resulting in the document Life Is a Journey: The Budapest Live Tapes. Djabe returned to the same spot earlier in 2019, without Hackett; his touring schedule wouldn’t allow him to participate live. Instead, a few weeks later while in Budapest, he took the recorded material and overdubbed his parts, which brings us to Back to Sardinia.

For his return to Blue Note Records after a several year hiatus, Van Morrison is back to his soulful mix of rhythm and blues, jazz supplemented by horns, with a bit of rock, blues, and Celtic swing. Never an artist easy to pin down, Van continues to satisfy with a mix of his curmudgeonly (fully appropriate to me) lyrics about the money-hungry, greedy recording business, and his feeling of wanting to be left alone with the guarding of his privacy (“If In Money We Trust” “End of the Rainbow“ and “Educating Archie“) balanced by a sweet sentimentality for the early days of Rock and Roll, the 1950s, with a healthy dose of spirituality (“Pagan Heart,” “Retreat and View” and “Open the Door to Your Heart.”) Van is like your cool uncle, whose taste you respect, but you know you have to give him “his distance.”

The experimental "Afro-Bossa" features Duke Ellington pushing his talented group to their limits. The jazz master tosses around the forms he knows so well. Other players include Cat Anderson, Paul Gonsalves, Harry Carney, and Cootie Williams. There is plenty of cornet, violin and plunger-muted trumpets.

After initially pursuing jazz fusion early in his career, Eddie Henderson has been focused on bop. This 2009 session features the trumpeter/flügelhornist with guitarist John Scofield, bassist Doug Weiss, and drummer Billy Drummond. Henderson explores several timeless compositions, conjuring a bit of Miles Davis as he plays muted trumpet in a lively workout of "Jitterbug Waltz," switching to flügelhorn for a richly textured interpretation of "For All We Know" and an extra funky setting of "Cantaloupe Island," while taking the standard "By Myself" into new territory with an abstract treatment. Henderson is back on muted trumpet for Al Foster's bittersweet ballad tribute "Missing Miles," with Scofield's soft guitar providing the perfect backdrop.
