Wolgang Borchert

This pianist and singer/songwriter from Germany, although not yet well-known beyond her home borders, has enlisted A-league help on this brooding and darkly elegant mix-up of jazz and Americana. Fred Frith needs no introduction, a veteran of innumerable avant-rock, avant-everything projects. Shahzad Ismaily is a multi-instrumentalist and sideman for Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Will Oldham, Marianne Faithfull, Patti Smith and many more. He plys guitar, bass and synths here and produced the album.

The first edition of Encyclopedia of Philosophy, published in eight large volumes in 1967, was the standard philosophy reference for more than a generation. Though it has aged gracefully, the passing years nevertheless called for updated bibliographies, revisions, and new articles, culminating in the 1996 one-volume Supplement.

This album provides a multifaceted insight into the compositional work of the composer Jürgen Golle from Zwickau, Germany. Spanning works from over four decades, it offers a cross-section of his compositional oeuvre. Jürgen Golle, who was a university lecturer for many years in addition to his compositional activity, sees the core of his work primarily in smaller forms, especially vocal music. This is suitably reflected in the intimacy of the variable duo formations that characterize this album.
