Dans le Languedoc, au XIIe siècle. Un traducteur des œuvres du grand philosophe arabe Averroès ( Ibn Rouchd ) est brûlé comme hérétique. Son fils, Joseph, parvient à s'enfuir, à gagner l'Andalousie et à trouver refuge auprès d'Averroès lui-même, alors Grand Juge du calife Al Mansour et médecin fort réputé. Nasser, le fils aîné du calife, compte parmi les plus fidèles disciples d'Averroès, tandis que le cadet, Abdallah, ne pense qu'à la danse, à la musique et à la belle gitane dont il est follement épris depuis quelques semaines. Une secte de fanatiques prend le pouvoir. Elle tente tout d'abord d'en finir avec un doux poète, Marwan, avant d'endoctriner Abdallah… Désirant amadouer les intégristes, le calife el-Mansour ordonne l'autodafé de toutes les ouvres du philosophe andalou Averroes dont les concepts influenceront non seulement l'age des Lumières en Occident, mais toute la pensée humaine. Les disciples d'Averroes et ses proches décident d'en faire des copies et de les passer à travers les frontières.

After the disciple of a great 12th century philosopher is burned at the stake for heresy, his young son decides that he will study under his father's mentor. Soon he is caught up in a battle between the philosopher's students and religious fundamentalists who object to their enlightenment.
