Country / Traditional Country / Bakersfield Sound / Honky Tonk

Buck Owens turned Bakersfield, California into the epicenter of hip country music in the mid-'60s. All it took was a remarkable streak of number one singles that steam rolled right through Nashville with their electrified twang, forever changing the notion of what constituted country music and codifying the Bakersfield sound as hard-driving rhythms, trebly Telecasters, and lean arrangements suited for honky tonks, beer joints, and jukeboxes all across America. Half-a-century later, these remain sonic signifiers of Bakersfield, so the term no longer conveys a specific sound, place, and era, a situation the weighty Bear Family box The Bakersfield Sound: Country Music Capital of the West 1940-1974 intends to rectify.

The early 80's is now a quarter of a century ago! Whilst there have been many 80's compilations we feel now is a good time to release an `edgier', cooler tracklisting highlighting some of the artists and tracks that may not be as familiar, but still defined the times.

2020 release. At the turn of the '80s, a new generation of musicians appeared who saw synthesizers not as dehumanizing machines but as musical instruments that could be coaxed into creating modern, beautiful and decidedly emotional music. It was almost as if the musicians were intentionally creating this music to prove the doubters wrong. Compiled by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, The Tears Of Technology celebrates this brief period when scruffy synth duos from the provinces broke through and took over British pop. Like mellotrons before them, synths could project a strange and deep emotion; listen to OMD's 'Sealand', or the Human League's 'WXJL Tonight', and it was clear that something in the wiring had an inherent melancholy. In the '60s and '70s, the synthesizer had mostly been regarded as either a novelty or a threat. Tomorrow's World warned us that the cold, heartless synth would soon make orchestras redundant.

Sixties Garage Rock | FLAC(tracks)+CUE+LOG | 1984 | DANCD032 | Artwork | 421 MB

Originally a BASF-LHD cassette-only release, this live recording showcases the distinctive mixture of Tex-Mex bounce and garage-punk raunch that anticipated such groups as the Lyres, Joe King Carrasco & the Crowns, and Elvis Costello & the Attractions. The band propels lead vocalist ? (aka Rudy Martinez) as he swaggers, taunts, and exhorts his way through 14 energized (if somewhat repetitive) songs, including "Don't Tease Me," "Girl (You Captivate Me)" (sung as "Girl (You Masturbate Me"), "I Can't Get Enough of You Baby," and "96 Tears." ? doesn't convey quite as much menace as he does on the original 1960s recordings of songs such as "Smokes," but since those original recordings are not readily available in the U.S., this is a reasonable substitute for a career retrospective. However, the group has released another live recording, Do You Feel It Baby?, which offers more songs and is easier to find.

The Czech Republic's Sebastien has gone through many trials, including band name and personnel changes over 10 years, to get to their release of their debut album Tears of White Roses. Yet with the strength of label Escape Music behind them and the enthusiastic support of Roland Grapow (Masterplan, ex-Helloween), Sebastien should be on the cusp of greatness. A strong supporting cast in the studio doesn't hurt either. Participants include Amanda Somerville (Avantasia, Aina, Kiske/Somerville), Apollo Papathanasio (Firewind, Spiritual Beggars), Doogie White (Cornerstone, ex-Rainbow, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), Fabio Lione (Rhapsody Of Fire, Vision Divine), Mike DiMeo (The Lizards, ex-Riot, ex-Masterplan), Roland Grapow (Masterplan, ex-Helloween), and Tore Moren (Jorn).

George Harrison's albums for Dark Horse drifted out of print in the late '90s as his contract with Warner Brothers expired. Over the half-decade, they fetched high prices on the collector's market, as any relatively rare Beatles-related item does, and the demand for these records – along with the Traveling Wilburys albums, which were part of Harrison's Dark Horse/Warner contract – never diminished…
