In 2015, composer Michael Zev Gordon took up the idea of writing musical diary entries, which has spawned this ongoing series of small pieces for solo piano. With most written in a single day, with only minor subsequent refinements, Gordon beautifully captures a feeling, a nuance, an image and, as is the nature of a diary, often with personal associations.

By analysing Rousseau's conception of the general will, Zev Trachtenberg characterises the attitude of civic virtue Rousseau believes individuals must have to cooperate successfully in society. Rousseau holds that culture affects political life by either fostering or discouraging civic virtue.

Cellist Joseph Houston beautifully captures Gordon’s reoccurring themes of the bitter-sweet waltz, unwavering stillness, elegiac simplicity, folk-like dances and fleeting brilliance.

The Fidelio Trio returns to Resonus Classics, joined by the acclaimed clarinettist Julian Bliss, to present this album of recent chamber works by British composer Michael Zev Gordon. Presenting a varied programme of instrument combinations, the trio and Julian present works stretching back over fifteen years, celebrating Michael’s individual and idiomatic voice along with both the fascinating and wide-ranging influences within his music.
