The symphonies presented on this CD are all quite different in their compositional intentions and basic stylistic traits, but they do evidence certain parallels in their formal design (two works in one movement, two times three movements), their origins and in several other aspects.

The early 20th century is a period that fascinates me. The prevalent musical aesthetic was disrupted by a new generation of composers who maintained their roots in tradition, but felt a great desire to expand music’s horizons: they formed a multitude of currents and embarked on a number of different paths, all driven by the idea of transfiguring everything they had previously known.

Bernd Alois Zimmermann (1918–1970) was one of the most distinctive composers in the musical avant-garde after the Second World War. While Karlheinz Stockhausen served as a kind of "generator" in Cologne during the 1950s and 60s, inventing completely new sounds and techniques, Zimmermann was in many ways his opposite, a "transformer" who redefined previously existing material by placing it in new contexts and collage-like structures, anticipating the ideas of the Postmodernists.

Three keyfigures from ECM’s contemporary music roster – Heinz Holliger, Thomas Zehetmair, and Thomas Demenga – team up for an exceptional recording of three works by German post-war composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Zimmermann, almost half a generation older than the serialists such as Boulez and Stockhausen, integrated state-of-the-art compositional methods in his writing while constantly following his own independent, highly expressive musical language.

The name of Bernd Alois Zimmermann is probably not a very familiar one to the experimental classical music listener. As this top-notch disc shows, Zimmermann's music was (and still is) strikingly original. It begins with his Cello Concerto in the form of a pas de trois, from the mid 1960s, a five-movement work that exploits to the fullest the solo cello as well as the unusual accompanying orchestra, which includes alto saxophone, contrabass tuba, electric guitar, prepared piano, glass harp, and even cimbalom.

It was in the 1960s, with the opera Die Soldatenand his Requiem füreinenjungen Dichter, that Bernd Alois Zimmermann became known as one of the leading composers of the German post-war generation. These and other works from the period were examples of what the composer himself called musical pluralism -a highly individual collage-like technique involving quotations and superimposed metres, rhythms and time levels. The works on the present disc -Zimmermann's complete production for solo piano -predate this, however.

The French composer Francis Poulenc wrote his Concert champêtre for harpsichordist Wanda Landowska. In doing so, he made a contribution to the renaissance of this historic keyboard instrument, having learned to play on a modern version made by the French builder Pleyel. The arrangement of the work is highly original. On the one hand, it is extremely contemporary.

The magic, enigma and uniqueness of Ludwig van Beethoven’s (1770–1827) Sonata “Kreutzer” in A major Op. 47 have influenced not only music history but also literature from Tolstoy to Dürrenmatt, and it takes a long search to find a chamber music work that has a similar nimbus. Wild and untamed not only the work itself but also its history of creation appears.
