There is a way a voice can cut through the fascia of reality, cleaving through habit into the raw nerve of experience. Nika Roza Danilova, the singer, songwriter, and producer who since 2009 has released music as Zola Jesus, wields a voice that does that. When you hear it, it is like you are being summoned to a place that’s already wrapped inside you but obscured from conscious experience. This place has been buried because it tends to hold pain, but it’s also a gift, because once it’s opened, once you’re inside of it, it can show you the truth. Zola Jesus’s new album, Arkhon, finds new ways of loosing this submerged, stalled pain.

Nika is the 25-year-old sole singer and songwriter behind Zola Jesus. Her album "Taiga" is at once challenging and accessible, and is undeniably branded with what Nika terms a “piercing ambition.” Such encompassing purpose, she explains, would be impossible without a newfound sense of personal and artistic self. The album is a declaration of that purpose; one laced with jarring clarity in both its content and production. Taiga, the Russian name for a boreal forest pays homage to Nika’s Russian roots and her time spent growing up in rural Wisconsin on a 100-acre farm.

Nika Roza Danilova has a voice so large it could single handedly keep all ships safe on a foggy night. It has also been used to good effect on the several albums of goth electronica she has made as Zola Jesus. The album sees her collaborate with producer Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth etc) on a typically dark album which veers from simplicity to full on icy blasts of power.

Zola Jesus Live At Roadburn 2018 is Zola Jesus first ever live album. Recorded at Roadburn Festival 2018 where Zola Jesus was invited by Jakob Bannon of Converge to play at his curated day. The album will be released on May 8th 2020 on all other digital channels. Also on May 8th 2020 pre-sales will start for the double vinyl and cd version. For a June 2020 release. Zola Jesus is the stage name of Russian American musician Nika Roza Danilova. Under the name Zola Jesus, she has released a number of genre bending EPs and albums. Her approach is a cross pollination of electronic/industrial, classical, and gothic sounds. All of it coming together as a dark and emotional artistic experience.

Gone are the morose, gothic lo-vibes and in their place is an airy almost dance track that still sounds as true to form as other endeavor Danilova has ever undertaken. An old hit and recent show-stopper live track, "Seatalk" has been re-recorded as well and this new well mic'd version is breathtakingly good. There will be a video coming for that soon too. Closer, "Lightsick" is a straight piano ballad. Not synth, real piano. And for her darker fans, "Tower" still has that Mad Maxian apocalypse creep we know and love.
