Tycho's debut record has run a long, twisted road since its initial release in 2004. Originally titled Sunrise Projector, producer Scott Hansen's dreamy, downtempo masterwork was first issued on the small San Francisco Gammaphone label before being picked up by the larger IDM-centered indie Merck Records. Hansen then readjusted the sequence and expanded the album, which was released by Merck under the new title Past Is Prologue in 2006. A blend of live instruments, gentle synths, and verdant, ambient textures, Hansen's tenacious debut stretches gracefully out, brimming with late-afternoon warmth. Largely instrumental, the 13 tracks are often flecked with odd conversational samples and feathery buried sounds, adding a sensory depth to the strong melodic compositions…

One of Lenny White's finest, most essential albums, The Adventures of Astral Pirates is a jazz-fusion masterpiece with a futuristic science-fiction theme. Star Wars was number one at the box office when, in 1977, White produced this disc with Al Kooper, and perhaps Elektra was hoping to cash in on the film's popularity. If you open the record's foldout cover, you can read White's tale of sci-fi battles that take place in the fifth millennium A.D.

Astral Weeks is generally considered one of the best albums in pop music history, but for all that renown, it is anything but an archetypal rock & roll album. It isn’t a rock & roll album at all. Van Morrison plays acoustic guitar and sings in his elastic, bluesy, soulful voice, accompanied by crack group of jazz studio players: guitarist Jay Berliner, upright bassist Richard Davis, Modern Jazz Quartet drummer Connie Kay, vibraphonist Warren Smith and soprano saxophonist John Payne (also credited on flute, though that’s debatable—some claim an anonymous flutist provided those parts).

In terms of sheer influence, an argument can be made that power metal wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Ronnie James Dio. During his stint with Rainbow and, to a greater extent, in his solo band, Dio set the blueprints for what would become power metal, with powerful, soaring vocals, and big, melodic riffs. Although as early as the late 70s, bands had begun to play a similar style of heavy metal (a term that didn’t even really exist at the time) to that of Rainbow, it was the mid-80s when power metal began to blossom, particularly in Europe. Bands like Accept and Helloween took sonic cues from Dio, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest, and created music that was arena-ready, without giving up that heavy edge metal fans demand. Trends come and go in metal, but power metal has stayed pretty consistent, as can be heard on Black Eyed Children, the latest release from Swedish power metal outfit Astral Doors.

"Requiem of Time" is best described as an extraordinary journey through the Hard Rock Universe. From the opening track, "Testament Of Rock" to the closing, "When Darkness Comes", the band presents many sides of musical talent. All 14 songs are pure gold and each is a potential hit. Catchy, classic Metal for those with a yearning for Sabbath and Dio by the well established Swedish band, Astral Doors.

"Notes From The Shadows", the phenomenal seventh offering from ASTRAL DOORS, picks up right where "Jerusalem" left off. The music is melodically powerful and has no weak moments anywhere on this 11-track release, solidifying the fact that bands like DIO, RAINBOW, DEEP PURPLE, JUDAS PRIEST, and BLACK SABBATH have heavily influenced their souls over the years. All of these influences shine through on 'The Last Temptation of Christ', a really catchy, up-tempo song that will be extremely pleasing to JUDAS PRIEST fans everywhere and there couldn't have been a better selection to start this album off on the right foot.

Astral Doors is a band that some laud for their Dio worshiping traits and others hate for the same reason. “Evil is Forever”, the sophomore effort from this Swedish group, takes the catchy and kinetic styling of their debut, “Of the Sun and the Father”, and adds a more traditionally inspired approach.
