Meredith Willson Active in music since the early '20s, songwriter, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist Meredith Willson is best-known for his Broadway scores for The Music Man (1957) and The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1960), and as the composer of the holiday standard "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas." Born in Iowa in 1902, Willson went to a music school in New York in addition to studying with a private tutor. During the early '20s, Willson became the flute and piccolo soloist in John Philip Sousa's concert band and toured the U.S. and Central and South America with them.

It may not be the "ultimate" collection of hits from the 1970's, but this ten disc set does indeed offer 198 of the songs that helped define the decade. Happily, they are all original recordings by the original artists, as they were heard on the radio. True, in a few cases that means the selections are "radio edits" (Rod Stewart's 1971 hit "Maggie May", for example, is missing the 30 second instrumental introduction that was included on the original album, but rarely played over the airwaves), but why quibble? The songs, though not necessarily remastered, all sound great, and the set includes some genuine treasures that have not (yet) been offered on other compilations. Highly recommended!

V-Disc: The Songs That Went To War is a 4CD box set released by Time-Life in 1992 that archives some of the V-Discs made during World War II. As the Wikipedia page indicates, "the records were produced for the use of United States military personnel overseas. Many popular singers, big bands and orchestras of the era recorded special V-Disc records. These 12-inch, vinyl 78 rpm gramophone recordings were created for the Army between October 1943 and May 1949. Navy discs were released between July 1944 and September 1945."
