Bruce Springsteen once said he intended to make an album with words like Bob Dylan that sounded like Phil Spector where he sang like Roy Orbison, a nifty summary of many, but not all, of his artistic ambitions and a key to his appeal. Unlike any other singer/songwriters saddled with the appellation of "the new Dylan" in the early '70s, Springsteen never hid how he was raised on '60s AM radio. He loved rock & roll, whether it was the initial blast from the '50s or the mini-symphonies from the days before the Beatles or the garage rockers that surfaced in the wake of the British Invasion, and all this could be heard within his wild, wooly collective E Street Band, a group who debuted on his second album, 1973's The Wild The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle, and who would support him throughout most of his career.

Saxophonist/vocalist Clarence Clemons was a member of Bruce Springsteen's backup group, the E Street Band, from 1973 to 2011. Clemons' soulful R&B stylings became a key element of the band's sound, notably on Springsteen's breakthrough hit "Born to Run" along with other singles and album tracks. Given his fiery soloing, audience rapport, and obvious camaraderie with Springsteen and the other E Street Band members, he was also a fan favorite during the group's marathon live sets. Clemons released several solo albums and scored a duet hit with Jackson Browne, "You're a Friend of Mine." He died on June 18, 2011 due to complications from a stroke. Springsteen delivered the eulogy at Clemons' funeral in Palm Beach, Florida, telling attendees, "He loved the saxophone, loved our fans, and gave everything he had every night he stepped on-stage."

Nils Lofgren is an American rock musician, recording artist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Along with his work as a solo artist, he has been a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band since 1984, a member of Crazy Horse (1970–1971; 1973; 2018-present), and founder/frontman of the band Grin. Lofgren was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the E Street Band in 2014. Before he was under the wing of Neil Young and before he made a series of underappreciated solo albums, guitarist Nils Lofgren formed Grin, a trio that was devoted to simple, basic rock & roll, in 1969. None of Grin's albums were commercially successful – they only received good reviews, not sales – but each showed a promising, dynamic group. Unfortunately, the group never fulfilled its potential, but the finest of its albums featured some terse, brilliant guitar from Lofgren that ranks with the best of his later work.

As Bruce Springsteen labored over the album that would become Born In The U.S.A., E Street Band tenor saxophonist Clarence Clemons took the opportunity to create this busman's holiday, fronting a septet he called The Red Bank Rockers. The group's lead singer was John "J.T." Bowen, a gruff-voiced shouter in the tradition of Wilson Pickett, and Clemons assembled such songwriters as Ellie Greenwich and Desmond Child to put together a set of neo-'60s R&B ravers. Also included was Springsteen's "Savin' Up," on which The Boss played rhythm guitar.

Billed as the “Piano & A Microphone” tour, Prince presented exactly what was advertised. A baby grand piano sat alone, with only a few clusters of candles sharing the stage, while a massive video screen projected kaleidoscopic swirls throughout the hour and 20 minute show. While remnants of the flu that sidelined him last week and caused the postponement of these shows was apparent when he talked (he did apologize for last week’s cancellation), when Prince sang, he sounded sublime. Sabotage has given us the best recording of Prince’s last show, and its a MUST OWN release in my opinion. I really did need all the filler tracks, but what matters is the quality of the final show, and its great.
