An open, globally oriented album that congenially unites the moment and the eternity. A sound that penetrates deep into the earth and suddenly returns from the center of gravity to the surface - often exactly where it is least suspected. A sound that no one has come up with, but that is as old as the creation itself and has been waiting for its medium to manifest itself. A sound that is suddenly there, hypnotic, compelling, vehement and indispensable. Actually, there are four tones, but the individual timbres of bassist Phil Donkin, alto saxophonist Wanja Slavin, bass clarinetist Joris Roelofs and drummer Martin France merge with such force to a symbiotic unity that the word ensemble in the traditional sense with considerable blurring is afflicted.

Blue Room: The 1979 Vara Studio Sessions in Holland spotlights the unexpected magic trumpeter/vocalist Chet Baker could conjure during the last decade of his life. Having achieved stardom on the West Coast in the '50s, Baker spent much of his career, from the '60s until his death in 1989, living and performing in Europe where his drug addiction and itinerant lifestyle were never as much of a barrier to getting work. Recorded in the Netherlands on two separate dates in 1979, the Blue Room sessions find Baker digging into some of his favorite standards, as well as a few unexpected song choices. The first session features one of his touring lineups of the period with pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, and drummer Charles Rice. This is the more cohesive of the sessions, as Baker offers warm takes of some of favorite standards, including "Oh, You Crazy Moon" and "The Best Thing for You," both of which he had just recorded on his classic 1977 comeback album You Can't Go Home Again.

Lamont Dozier and Brian and Eddie Holland made their mark as songwriters and producers. The trio's songs dominated the charts in the '60s, and all three are now members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Few know that all three began as singers. Lamont had recorded with the Romeos for Atco, then cut solo singles; Brian recorded "Shock" for a small Detroit label prior to Motown, and cut a single at Motown with Dozier; Eddie sang for United Artists and Motown before joining brother Brian and Lamont to form the blockbuster songwriting team. Most of the recordings by Holland-Dozier-Holland featured either Lamont Dozier or Brian Holland.

Blue Room: The 1979 VARA Studio Sessions in Holland features two previously unissued lost studio sessions of trumpet/vocal icon Chet Baker captured in glorious stereo at the legendary VARA studio 2 in Hilversum, the Netherlands for the KRO radio program Nine O’Clock Jazz. The April 10, 1979 session features pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, and drummer Charles Rice; and the November 9th session features pianist Frans Elsen, bassist Victor Kaihatu, and drummer Eric Ineke. Both sessions were originally produced by Edwin Rutten and Lex Lammen for KRO-NCRV, and are now being produced for release officially for the first time by “jazz detective” Zev Feldman and Frank Jochemsen. Transferred from the original KRO radio tape reels.

Excellent Live disc by this great blues/rock band from Holland featuring axeslinger Sjors Nederlof on guitar and the soul-powered vocal mojo of Phil Bee. King Mo rock the blues on the "Live In Holland" disc with a strong Stevie Ray Vaughan @ Texas blues vibe. Includes several extended Hendrix jams complete with a superb encore version of "All Along the Watchtower" featuring Special Guest Guitar Legend Jan Akkerman.

This album is the third in my “dedication trilogy", following Delayed Reaction (for Michel Petrucciani) and Flaubert’s Dance (for several musical heroes). The music here springs from the often unconscious influences that form the building blocks of compositions. These derive not only from the wide jazz landscape explored in my radio programme “The Art of Jazz”, but also from experiences arising from playing and teaching.
