It was a musical cocktail born in a marketing meeting: Two parts easy listening, one part jazz, a healthy dollop of conga drums, a sprinkling of bird calls, and a pinch of textless choir. Serve garnished with an alluring woman on the album jacket for best results. Liberty Records co-founder Si Waronker called it Exotica; the soundtrack for a mythical air conditioned Eden, packaged for mid-century, tiki torch-wielding armchair safariers. In the five years after Exotica—Martin Denny’s 1957 landmark Liberty debut—arrived, hundreds of other ethnographic forgeries washed up in record racks all over the U.S., bearing titles like Sophisticated Savage, Sacred Idol, Chant of the Jungle, Polynesian Paradise, Exotic Paradise, Taboo, Primitiva, Forbidden Island, Afrodesia, Hypnotique, Percussion Exotique, and a barrel’s worth of other portmanteaus. “All of those ica and itiva endings I came up with because I thought I was being cute,” Waronker said. “And I don’t know why, but nobody got wise.”

Saint Just was a seventies Italian progressive group but not really reminiscent of the typical Italian sound. Influences from folk, psychedelic and classical can be heard in their music. The most remarkable instrument in their music is the vocals of Jane Sorrenti that float above the music. Her vocal delivery is definitely an acquired taste. The group released only two albums and the line-up is very different in these two albums. In the 1st album there were only three official members of which the saxophonist Robert Fix was not included in the 2nd album. For their 2nd album the remaining members Jane Sorrenti and Antonio Verde (classical guitar, bass) added electric guitarists Tito Rinesi and Andrea Faccenda as well as a drummer Fulvio Maras.

In March 2022, journalist Thomas Loewner of Southwest German Radio (SWR) described the Rebecca Trescher Tentet as one of the “most interesting ensembles in the contemporary German jazz scene.” This ensemble with its unusual instrumentation – and a characteristic musical language full of poetry and variety paired with clear, symphonically inspired structures – has in fact quickly established a place for itself in the German jazz scene and beyond. Breathtaking virtuoso solos alternate with six-part chorale textures, fascinating harmonies employing several saxophones, flutes and clarinets, and powerful tutti passages with cello and flugelhorn. Elements in the foreground fade away in the next moment, while delicate accompanying figures suddenly drive the music forward. The borders between meticulously composed art music and spontaneous improvisation are casually erased. And one is constantly aware of the exceptional and inspiring energy of this ensemble, which brings together some of Germany’s most outstanding musicians.
