With classical pianist Kevin Savigar established as his songwriting partner, Rod Stewart marched into the mid-'80s in finer shape than he'd been in for a few years. Every Beat of My Heart was his 15th solo album and, after the disappointments of the preceding Body Wishes and Camouflage, the wistful romance of the title track alone suggested that he was back on track. Unfortunately, it was not to be. One could compile a genuinely excellent collection from across Stewart's entire '80s output. But Every Beat of My Heart, like the LPs on either side of it, found him floundering directionless in a sea of, on the one hand, syrupy schmaltz; and, on the other, clichéd rockers, with just the occasional flash of style sneaking in, to remind us why we even cared any longer.

Rod Stewart first embraced his appeal to the middle of the road way back in 2002 when he recorded It Had to Be You, the first in a series of explorations of the Great American Songbook. Given those albums, it's no great surprise to hear Stewart sing with an orchestra on You're in My Heart: Rod Stewart with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. What is a surprise is that he's hopped upon the orchestral overdub bandwagon, letting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra glop on strings and horns over original vocal tracks for such hits as "Maggie May." Clever guy that he is, Stewart contributes a couple of ringers – including a duet with Robbie Williams on "It Takes It Two" – but those only wind up illustrating how stilted and stiff the overdubs are.

It was released by Warner Bros. Records (WEA 9 25987-2) and contains sixty-five tracks, five of which had never before been released. Storyteller spans the whole of Rod’s career beginning with the 1964 release of "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" and ending with "Downtown Train", a new song for 1989. It was designed for release in the US and contains four discs each covering a different period somewhat chronologically. Disc One spans 1964–1971 and includes " Can I Get a Witness?" recorded while Rod was with Steampacket and which had never before been released. Disc Two spans 1971–1976. Disc Three spans 1975–1981 and includes "To Love Somebody" featuring Booker T. & the M.G.'s. In the liner notes Rod recalls that this version was recorded shortly before Al Jackson, Jr. was killed. Disc Four spans 1981–1989 and includes never before released versions of "I Don't Want to Talk About It" and "This Old Heart of Mine".
