2021 finds Zev Feldman teaming with the Elemental Music label, to release yet another long lost live recording by an Evans trio, Behind the Dikes - The 1969 Netherlands Recordings.
This is music that has long been available, in an underground sort of way, on bootleg recordings of sub-standard sound quality - something that is problematic in most music, unforgivable in regards to Bill Evans. That has changed with this official release. The sound is crisp and clean, showcasing the pristine and distinctive Evans touch, and the always remarkable interplay with this particular trio, with Evans joined by bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morell.

Brad Mehldau’s Variations on a Melancholy Theme will be released June 11, 2021, on Nonesuch Records. The recording features the pianist/composer and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, which commissioned this orchestral version of the work, which comprises a theme and eleven variations plus a cadenza and postlude; the album also includes an encore, “Variations ‘X’ and ‘Y.’” You can watch a video with excerpts from the piece below. (Mehldau originally composed Variations on a Melancholy Theme for pianist Kirill Gerstein.) Mehldau and Orpheus toured Europe, Russia, and the US with the piece, including a 2013 performance at Carnegie Hall. Speaking to the combination of classical form with jazz harmonies in the work’s musical language, Mehldau wrote, “I imagine it as if Brahms woke up one day and had the blues.”
Prior to the release of his second full-length, U.K. producer Ross from Friends wrote a unique piece of software for Ableton's Max for Live platform called Thresho that records, saves, and catalogs audio as it's being generated, beginning once the audio reaches a user-defined threshold and ending as soon as it goes below the threshold. This made it easy for the artist to improvise for hours and not worry if he got everything on tape or not. He ended up with a massive archive of samples and ideas just from experimenting for several months on end, and he was easily able to compose an album out of it. When considering the "strict" period of neo-prog (i.e., the 1980s), The Wake is definitely a classic. Together with Marillion's first LPs, it helped define what neo-progressive was and generated dozens of sound-alike albums by as many bands in the U.K. and worldwide. While IQ would top The Wake with the 1997 two-CD set Subterranea (stronger compositions, stronger musicianship), the former remains the band's true classic, a must-have for anyone remotely interested in progressive rock from the 1980s. The third album by the band, it took a more pop approach than Tales From the Lush Attic; there was no 20-minute epic track and songs were rather simple in terms of structure.
