Carlo Maria Giulini: The Complete Sony Recordings offers performances from 1989 to 1995, which represent the maestro's late output. Presented on 22 CDs in sleeves featuring original cover art, these are thoughtful and sober readings of repertoire Giulini had often performed throughout his career, though here they are noted especially for their slower tempos and weightier expressions.

The Giulini set on DG, with Cappuccilli, Cotrubas and Domingo is exceptional: searching, humane, powerfully registered… It can also be said that neither Bonynge nor Sinopoli search out the score's prevailingly dark sonorities as surely as Giulini (in his insistence on the score's dark colours and his interest in its portrayal of primary human affections.

The Vienna Philharmonic (VPO; German: Wiener Philharmoniker), founded in 1842, is an orchestra considered to be one of the finest in the world. The Vienna Philharmonic is based at the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria. Its members are selected from the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera. Selection involves a lengthy process, with each musician demonstrating his or her capability for a minimum of three years' performance for the opera and ballet. After this probationary period, the musician may request an application for a position in the orchestra from the Vienna Philharmonic's board.

The recordings that Giulini made with the Chicago Symphony between 1969 and 1976 document an extraordinary partnership and remain among the finest of the conductor's career. Giulini's Mahler First is more lyric than most, yet with enough energy to satisfy Mahlerians; the last movement a tribute to the conductor's unerring sense of orchestral balances even in crushing climaxes. His rendition of the orchestral movements of Berlioz's "dramatic symphony" Romeo and Juliet excels in its poetry, the warmly caressing Chicago strings in the Love Scene irresistible. The Beethoven Seventh is an eloquent blend of the Dionysian and Apollonian approaches to this "dance symphony," with glowing horns, driving rhythms and lovely solo turns. Giulini's later remakes of the Beethoven and other works in the set often were soporific; here, he's on target.

This performance is a revelation. Philip Reed, in his authoritative note, points out that, unbeknown to many, Britten and Giulini had a mutual respect for and an admiration of each other’s work. Here they combine to give a performance that is a true Legend, as this BBC series has it. Giulini’s reading is as dramatic and viscerally exciting as any I have heard. The music leaps from the page new-minted in his thoroughgoing, histrionically taut hands, the rhythmic tension at times quite astonishing. For instance, the sixth movement, ‘Libera me’, is simply earth-shattering in its effect, every bar, every word, every instrument sung and played to the hilt – and so it is throughout, with the live occasion added to the peculiar, and in this case peculiarly right, acoustics of the Albert Hall adding its own measure of verite to the inspired occasion.

It was an eminently sensible decision to couple Zimerman's previously separate Chopin concertos on a single CD. The Ax/Ormandy/RCA disc is the only rival as a coupling, so let me say at once that in different moods I would be equally happy with either. The main difference, I think, is the actual sound. From DG we get a closer, riper sonority, with Zimerman's piano much more forwardly placed. Both orchestra and piano are more distanced on the RCA recording, especially Ax's piano. This, together with Ax's lighter, more translucent semiquaver figuration (and sometimes his greater willingness to stand back and merely accompany—as in certain episodes in the F minor Concerto's finale) often conjures up visions of Chopin himself at the keyboard, and we know he was often criticized for insufficiently strong projection. From an interpretative viewpoint, it's usually a matter of roundabouts and swings. In the E minor work, for instance, we get a slightly more flowing Romanze from Ax, and a slightly more propulsive finale from Zimerman. Orchestral honours are similarly divided, with Giulini extracting an exceptionally rich cantabile from his American orchestra.
