Kelly Hogan takes her vast experience working with Neko Case, Andrew Bird, Mavis Staples, Drive By Truckers, The Mekons, and so many others, and molds that into something both new and instantly classic. Kelly curates an ambitious collection of songs, many written specifically for her, from M. Ward, Vic Chesnutt, Stephin Merritt, John Wesley Harding, Robyn Hitchcock, and Andrew Bird among others. She is backed on the album by an all star group of musicians: Booker T Jones, James Gadson, Gabriel Roth and Scott Ligon.

Ultimately, what makes a voice appealing is not just skill and the ability to communicate but cadence and timbre. A voice that is technically pristine can also be hollow, while character idiosyncrasies might please. Beverley Church Hogan has a seasoned voice. It’s just chesty enough to add a pinch more emotion and affect between the lines. Low notes palpably breathe. Almost everything arrives round-edged. She sounds honest.

Albert Lee occupies an odd niche in music – British by birth and upbringing, he spent the mid-'60s as a top R&B guitarist, but in the 1970s became one of the top rockabilly guitarists in the world, and no slouch in country music either. In England he's a been household name, and in Nashville and Los Angeles he's been one of the most in-demand session guitarists there is; but outside of professional music circles in America, he's one of those vaguely recognizable names, and occasionally misidentified with his similar-sounding contemporary, ex-Ten Years After guitarist Alvin Lee (with whom he did share a berth once, in Jerry Lee Lewis's band on the latter's London Sessions album) – but where Alvin was a hero of Woodstock and a flashy guitarist, in the manner of British blues extroverts Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, Albert is much more likely to be found playing in the background, behind the Everly Brothers or alongside Eric Clapton.

Title aside, what the Cranberries were doing wasn't that common at the time, at least in mainstream pop terms; grunge and G-funk had done their respective big splashes via Nirvana and Dr. Dre when Everybody came out first in the U.K. and then in America some months later. Lead guitarist Noel Hogan is in many ways the true center of the band at this point, co-writing all but three songs with O'Riordan and showing an amazing economy in his playing, and having longtime Smiths/Morrissey producer Stephen Street behind the boards meant that the right blend of projection and delicacy still held sway.

Blues / Louisiana Blues

Hardly have we savoured the full taste of “Rhythm ’n’ Bluesin’ By The Bayou” than here comes another bucketful of steaming South Louisiana gumbo and this time it’s “Bluesin’ By The Bayou” – a spicy mix of guitars, harmonicas, and even the occasional accordion, accompanying those tales of despair or machismo that are the recipe for the blues. All the tracks stem from the studios of J.D. Miller in Crowley and Eddie Shuler in Lake Charles. These two men were wonders at spotting talent and getting the best out of the performers, as illustrated on the 28 tracks on this CD.

♫ As far back as the beginning of talking pictures, movie stars who couldn't sing were dubbed by a talented group of vocalists known as "ghost singers." These gifted people, both male and female, had to not only emulate the voices of the stars, but also follow where they breathed and how they moved, while also trying to copy their personalities. They did all of this, and in most cases, never even got credit. 'They Called Them Ghosts' focuses on eight of the best women: Jo Ann Greer; India Adams; Anita Ellis; Annette Warren; Louanne Hogan; Nan Wynn; Eileen Wilson; and Martha Mears. Between them, they sang for such stars as: Rita Hayworth; Lucille Ball; Ava Gardner; Veronica Lake; Jeanne Crain; Cyd Charisse; Vera-Ellen; Jayne Mansfield; Kim Novak; and Gloria Grahame ♫

Nick Tosches once famously described Wanda Jackson as "the greatest menstruating rock & roll singer whom the world has ever known," and while he doubtless chose those words for comic effect, the nervy crudity is not entirely inappropriate. At her best, Wanda Jackson sounded wild and ravenously sensual in a way that few artists dared in the mid-'50s, especially not female vocalists, and sides like "Let's Have a Party," "Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad," and "Fujiama Mama" run neck in neck with Jerry Lee Lewis or Billy Lee Riley for sheer frenzied rockabilly energy.
