The world-renowned early music specialist and keyboard player Ton Koopman and the violinist Catherine Manson perform the six Sonatas for Harpsichord and Violin, BWV 1014-1019 of Johann Sebastian Bach on this new 2-CD set for Challenge Classics. Their previous collaboration on the label was an outstanding recording of the music of Buxtehude. Catherine Manson enjoys a versatile performing career specialising in period performance as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral leader. She became the current leader of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra in 2006, and as first violinist of the London Haydn Quartet has been involved in a critically acclaimed series of recordings of the Haydn quartets for Hyperion.
Returning to the scene after a lengthy absence – during which time the shock rocker began to see some of the consequences of numerous assault accusations – Marilyn Manson barreled headlong on the "innocent until proven guilty" route, lashing out at detractors and critics with his 12th studio album, One Assassination Under God: Chapter 1. Objectively, One Assassination is another strong late-era set that's packed with dramatic industrial-lite statements and rollicking spook-show anthems, where Manson's twisted wordplay, (no-longer-that-shocking) religious imagery, and cartoonish cult-master antics intersect.
The authority on Rameau in the Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians spent a lot of words on these pieces. All YOU have to know is that the usual "continuo" situation of the bass instrument playing the same notes as those found under the harpsichordist's left hand is not present here. This is not a suite with violin on top and bass viol for continuo - but "concerted" harpsichord pieces with the help of a violin and a bass viol. The first and last suites are my favorites, but if you think you like French baroque music, you will thoroughly enjoy the whole disc.
Heaven Upside Down is the tenth studio album by American rock band Marilyn Manson, released on October 6, 2017 by Loma Vista Recordings and Caroline International. The record was originally due for release on Valentine's Day, and had a working title of Say10. However, its release was delayed, principally due to the eponymous vocalist being unhappy with the quality of the record by that date, and also because of the band's touring commitments and producer Tyler Bates' schedule scoring films, as well as the death of Manson's father during production, to whom the album was later dedicated.
Marilyn Manson started out as a depraved, marginally talented group of freaks that played a caustic but undeveloped brand of metallic industrial noise. Then Trent Reznor stepped into the studio for seven months with the band, and Manson emerged with the most intense, visceral, mechanical metal album since The Downward Spiral. Antichrist Superstar is a horror-house of grisly atrocities that stains as indelibly as a bathful of warm blood. Brooding rhythms collide with corrosive samples and buzzsaw guitar riffs, while vocalist Marilyn croons irresistible melodies in the voice of a vagrant regurgitating broken light-bulb shards. Essential listening, regardless of how much input Reznor had.
