Portishead‘s exceptional live album, Roseland NYC Live, which features the trip hop icons backed by a 28-piece orchestra, was released 25 years ago today (11/2/1998) and to celebrate, the band have released an expanded edition to streaming services. It adds “Undenied” and “Numb” from the concert film as well as the full length performance of “Western Eyes,” and the whole thing’s been remastered.

J J Holiday has got a big greezy sound when he plays his axe. A stone soul poet of the slide guitar, he carries the Delta in his ass pocket. He's played on all kinds of modern shit, some movies etc. But his debut was as thee unknown sideman on the last known recordings made for the now defunct Paramount label's famed 13,000 race series (Paramount Records: Home of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Hokum Boys, Biddleville Quintette & The Jubilee Gospel Team). He was just about to embark on his solo career for their satellite label QRS, when all holy hell broke loose due to that big crash of 19 and 29. Paramount folded up shop right quick.

To celebrate his 70th birthday and 7 Decades in Music, Midge Ure rounded off a year long run of dates and festivals with headline sold out show at London's Royal Albert Hall. The concert covered songs from nearly every aspect of his career, from Ultravox, Visage, Phil Lynott and his past 30 years as a solo artist. Joined by his long time, Band Electronica and specials guest Caroline Dale, and Ty Unwin who worked with Midge on his 2017 Orchestrated album. The centerpiece of the shows was a performance of Ultravox classic album Vienna in full. This 3CD set includes the full concert split into 4 sets, acoustic, electric, the Vienna album and a host of greatest hits for the encores. Newly mixed by Richard Whittaker (Ultravox, Thin Lizzy, The Who) and overseen by Midge Ure.

Dave Brubeck was an American jazz pianist, composer and bandleader who was very much an exponent of the west coast ‘cool school’ of musicians, and who became known for his experiments with time signatures. Having made his first recordings in 1946, he became one of the jazz artists to help pioneer the growth of the vinyl long-playing album market recording for the Fantasy label in the early ‘50s before he moved to Columbia in 1954. This 35-track 3-CD collection (it contains a number of extended performances) comprises almost all the titles from five ‘live’ albums which were recorded during these years, and released during or soon after this era. Those albums were “Jazz at Storyville”, “Jazz at the Blackhawk”, “Jazz at the College of the Pacific”, “Jazz At Oberlin” and “Brubeck & Desmond at Wilshire Ebell” on the Fantasy label, and “Jazz Goes To College” on Columbia, with the recordings presented mostly in chronological order of recording rather than release. It features one solo performance along with trio and quartet performances, with Paul Desmond (alto sax), bassists Wyatt Ruther, Ron Crotty and Bob Bates, and drummers Lloyd Davis, Joe Dodge and Herb Barman. It captures Brubeck’s groups as they took their music into clubs, concert halls and colleges on the west coast and across the country, and offers a fine showcase for their improvisations at a key stage of Brubeck and Desmond’s careers.
