The film opens with a montage of scenes of daily life in Australia in the 1970s: a rural school in the desert, the main street of an outback town, a traffic jam in the city, all being affected by unusually adverse weather conditions that suddenly appear. Only the local Aboriginals seem to recognize the cosmological significance of these weather phenomena. During one of these "freak rainstorms" in Sydney, an altercation occurs among a group of Aboriginals in a pub, which results in the mysterious death of one of them. At the coroner's inquest, the unexplained death is ruled a homicide and four men are accused of murder. Through the Australian Legal Aid system, a lawyer is procured for their defence. The circumstances by which he was contacted and retained are unusual, in that his law practice is corporate taxation and not criminal. He nonetheless takes on the case, and immediately his professional and personal life begin to unwind.

En quelques jours, l'Australie est frappée par plusieurs phénomènes atmosphériques étranges. David Burton y voit là les raisons rituelles d'un crime perpétré par des aborigènes.

The movie begins at a blood bank. A homeless man walks into the clinic and sits by another homeless man (Luke Goss) with a scar running down his chin. He sees that the scarred man looks nervous and tries to relax him by telling him that they pay well there. The other man still looks uneasy as the nurse takes him into the clinic. They walk down a very dark and deserted hallway until they reach a room with several people waiting. The man starts to panic and is forced into the medical chair in the center of the room. A vampire starts a blood draining device and is about to suck out the homeless man's blood when the man's whimpering turns into derisive laughter. The homeless man drains the blood of the female guard, and takes several bullets near the heart without serious harm before hurling the second guard against the wall. Grabbing the hapless vampire, the man's jaws open up and he looks at the surveillance camera and speaks in the vampire language, "Vampires, I hate vampires."

Face à eux, un groupe de vampires d'élite connu sous le nom de Bloodpack. Dirigée par la jeune Nyssa, une experte en arts martiaux, cette équipe s'entraîne dans un seul but : tuer Blade. Mais les priorités changent. Une nouvelle menace vient de faire son apparition sous les traits de Jared Nomak. Ce dernier est l'hôte d'un virus hautement contagieux et mortel pour l'homme et les vampires. Les deux races vont devoir unir leurs forces pour éliminer Jarek et les Reapers, une nouvelle espèce de créatures qu'il a engendrée.

That this 1946 noir was the only Orson Welles film to show profit on release and that it was the director’s least favourite picture might suggest an absence of his signature talent. But while Welles had been pressured into making a more conventional (ie commercial) film after what RKO Radio Pictures saw as his disastrous second film, the studio butchered but still brilliant The Magnificent Ambersons, the auteur nevertheless managed to turn in a terrific cat-and-mouse thriller that’s full of recognisably Wellesian touches (notably the climax set in a church clocktower). The great man himself plays a German war criminal hiding out in a small Connecticut town, where he poses as a teacher and is engaged to lovely Loretta Young. Hot on his tail, however, is Nazi hunter Edward G Robinson. That casting was forced on Welles (who wanted his regular player Agnes Moorhead), but it works splendidly anyway.

Un enquêteur, Wilson, relâche de prison Konrad Meinike (Konstantin Shayne), un criminel de guerre nazi. Il espère que ce dernier le guidera à attraper un autre fugitif très reconnu, Franz Kindler (Orson Welles). Meinike retrouve Kindler, qui se fait passer pour “Charles Rankin”, un professeur d’histoire dans la charmante petite ville de Harper au Connecticut. Une ironie troublante fait qu’un criminel nazi notoire enseigne l’histoire du monde à l’élite Américaine tout en étant marié à la fille (Loretta Young) d’un juge de la cour suprême (Philip Merivale). Le film est un divertissant jeu du chat et de la souris avec Wilson qui met une incroyable pression sur Kindler pour révéler sa véritable identité.
