Camping at Cherry Pond

Henry Abbott, "Camping at Cherry Pond"

This was a show worth the price of admission, and we sat and watched it for fully ten minutes, when a shifting breeze apparently carried our scent to the mother, who instantly sounded a note of warning, and the family party quickly disappeared through the brush into the tall timber, and we paddled back across Cherry Pond to our breakfast of flapjacks, syrup, and onions.

Vintage | English | December 26, 2007 | ISBN: 0375710515 | 304 pages | azw, epub, lrf, mobi | 2 mb

This book is one of the many I have read over the past year that take a much more zen approach to food. In particular, it has been wonderful for helping me reframe how I think about food choice and body image. I really appreciate how the author focuses on ENJOYING food instead of fearing it. I also appreciate her encouragement to skip the scale and focus on simply feeling comfortable in your clothes. I can't say that I've lost a lot of weight following the principles in this book, but I am certainly enjoying food a lot more, which was the higher goal for me.

Parents' Guide to the Middle School Years

Joe Bruzzese "Parents' Guide to the Middle School Years"
Celestial Arts | English | April 28, 2009 | ISBN: 1587613417 | 170 pages | azw, epub, lrf, mobi | 1,9 mb

This book ranks as one of the best I've seen on helping your child transition out of the elementary years into a future of academic success. For many kids, middle school is the beginning of a radically different learning environment. For the first time, they travel from classroom to classroom to learn from a variety of teachers who each cover a specific subject. They also confront social issues at an age that would have been unthinkable even a decade ago.

Gertruda's Oath: A Child, a Promise, and a Heroic Escape During World War II

Ram Oren, Barbara Harshav "Gertruda's Oath: A Child, a Promise, and a Heroic Escape During World War II"
Doubleday Religion | English | August 3, 2010 | ISBN: 0385527195 | 320 pages | azw, epub, lrf, mobi | 2,5 mb

This is a beautiful, sensitively written testimony of an extraordinary woman, Gertruda and her charge, two year old Michael Stolowitzky.
As with most all books written about this savage time in history, the book contains desperation, tragedy and deprivation. Though the author abstains from graphic detail and focuses on the beautiful, eternal bond between nanny and the child she raises as her own.

Pocket Books | English | September 23, 2014 | ISBN: 1451685246 | 384 pages | azw, epub, lrf, mobi | 3,6 mb

I have been a Karen Hawkins fan for many years and I just when I think I can't love her books any more that I already do, she surprises me! The Prince Who Loved Me is the most recent addition to my "keeper shelf". Karen Hawkins takes on the Cinderella fairy tale, setting it in Scotland, with a foreign Prince and step-sisters you don't hate. Bronwyn, our heroine, is a young lady deemed on the shelf at the ripe old age of 24, and she is fine with that.

It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken: The Smart Girl's Break-Up Buddy

Harmony | English | September 5, 2006 | ISBN: 0767921968 | 288 pages | azw, epub, lrf, mobi | 3,05 mb

I am a psychologist working at a college counseling center, and I have recommended this book to several of my clients who have experienced a relationship breakup. However, because the tone of this book is very lighthearted, almost irreverent, I've been selective in my recommendations. The authors, a husband and wife team who talk freely about their own past breakups infuse plenty of humor into their work.
