Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) was an important composer from the late Classical period primarily known for his solo piano compositions and piano concertos. In recent years, however, attention has been given to his chamber music, operas, and sacred works. He tended to write long-breathed melodies, often used Alberti bass accompaniments and dotted rhythms, and favored the sonata-allegro and rondo forms. Among his greatest works in the keyboard genre are the Sonata in A Flat, for piano 4 hands, Op. 92, and the Sonata in F Sharp, Op. 81. His Mass, Op. 111, and some of his cantatas are also important works.

“Porta Magna” is the name of the main door of the cathedral of San Petronio in Bologna. This church was planned to be the largest in the world, even bigger than that of St Peter's in Rome. Among the great things that have happened here is the creation of the music chapel of San Petronio where between the end of 1600 and beginning of 1800 outstanding musicians have carried out their tasks. Among these Jacchini and Domenico Gabrielli were the first to compose for the violoncelllo solo (the pieces on the CD are their complete works for cello). Over time the expression Porta Magna has meant the place par excellence where making music.

Robert Schumann (8 June 1810 – 29 July 1856) is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. The originality of his work pushed at emotional, structural and philosophical boundaries. Schumann’s music is largely programmatic, meaning it tells a story (through music, not specifically through words). Through the 1830s Schumann wrote a vast quantity of piano music which included pictorial cycles with literary or personal associations such as Papillons, Carnaval and Davidsbündlertänze.

This is a fine recording of two vastly under-appreciated works by young cello virtuoso Han-Na Chang. She has the extraordinary technique to play the excruciatingly difficult cadenza in the central movement of the Sinfonia Concertante and the sustained tone to play the long, lyrical melodies in the opening movement of the cello sonata. Antonio Pappano is a faithful accompanist whether he's directing the London Symphony Orchestra in the Sinfonia Concertante or playing the piano in the cello sonata.

Classical / Baroque / Chamber Music / Flute

Here comes from a guy nickname as "The Handel of Sweden". Johan Helmich Roman is Baroque composer born in Stockholm. He was a violinist and oboist. He was leading figure in Swedish Royal Orchestra back then in 1720s. His most famous work happened to be a wedding compilation called "Drottningholmsmusique" a large orchestral suite for the wedding of the Crown Prince Adolf Frederick of Sweden and Louisa Ulrika of Prussia. In this CD we found 12 flute sonatas for Basso Continuo, which replaced by harpsichord and cello. The form was most famous back then for flute enthusiast as they are simple. The pieces are somehow Handellian in spirit. This CD will enrich our experience and knowledge in Baroque flute repertoire. The whole CD is given performance by flutist Jed Wentz, who happened to be American flutist born in New Brighton PA. He is expert in Baroque repertoire.
