In 1994, John Grant, the man whose music we now know and (yes, really) unashamedly adore, formed The Czars. For 10 years they toiled, releasing six studio albums to much critical praise but zero commercial gain. When the band split up in 2004, Grant went Awol for several years, returning in 2010 with his debut solo album, Queen of Denmark. Yet it’s instructive to note that his modus operandi has always been to enter the confessional, take a deep breath, kneel, and start talking.

This is a great collection of Doo Wop tunes from back in the day! 587 tracks total. Lots of rare tunes from lots of groups. If you like Doo Wop and you don't have this series, you will want these. As I once read on a Doo Wop site, "Rock and Roll may be here to stay but Doo Wop never left". This series consists of 20 volumes and it is long out of print.

While Black Fuzz, recorded for Kanye West's Sony-distributed boutique label, remains unreleased, Sa-Ra return to Ubiquity, the independent that released the trio's first 12" single, for their first "proper" album. For a band that's been compared to Joy Division, Leonard Cohen, Wilco, and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, the National sure sounds a lot more like the Czars or Uncle Tupelo on this sophomore album Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers. Where the band might lack Joy Division's angular fury, Cohen's existentialism, and Cave's vampiric attack, vocalist Matt Berninger and company whip up a murky alt country meets chamber pop vibe that's quite potent. The five-piece mostly keeps things on the country side of the fence during the album's first half, as slide guitars and fiddles overpower just about any hint of rock styling except the drumbeat, occasional feedback, and some screeching guitar freak-outs.
