Seompi was an acronym for "self expression on musically potential instruments," and also the name of one of the hardest-rocking bands to come out of Texas in the early '70s. During the late '60s and early '70s, Texas had evolved from the garage rock state of the mid-'60s to one of America's hard rock capitols. Bands such as the Oxford Circle, Watermusic, the Remaning Few, Moving Sidewalks, 13th Floor Elevators, and the Headstones were evolving from a garage sound into that of heavy, guitar-dominated hard rock. Texas' Cicadelic label had brought many such bands to light by way of singles, but the times were changing. Groups like Josephus, ZZ Top, and Mariani were changing the face of Texas rock. Music was becoming heavy, and many former garage bands were experimenting with new sounds and techniques…

The Evil One : Roky Erickson was very much a changed man when he re-emerged on the music scene in the late '70s after a deeply troubling stay in a mental institution following an arrest for drugs in 1969. The graceful but energetic proto-psychedelia of Erickson's music with the 13th Floor Elevators was replaced by a hot-wired straight-ahead rock sound which suggested an updated version of the teenaged garage pounders Roky recorded with his early group the Spades, and the charming psychobabble of Tommy Hall's lyrics with the Elevators gave way to twisted narratives documenting Roky's obsessive enthusiasm for cheezoid horror movies of the 1950s.

Dave Alvin, Victor Krummenacher (Cracker, Camper Van Beethoven), Michael Jerome (Toadies, Better Than Ezra) and David Immerglück (Counting Crows, Camper Van Beethoven) form the core of this group of seasoned musicians, who have joined forces to take a trip back to the psychedelic folk/rock sound of the late 1960s and early 1970s. They put their own spin on songs made famous by Alice Coltrane, 13th Floor Elevators, Fred Neil and others, plus an original song, "Claudia Cardinale,."

2011 limited edition LP replica release by Phoenix Records. Classic wasted stoner rock from 1971. Joint 1st in Julian Cope’s Top 50 Japanese album chart (along with Flower Traveling Band’s Satori). Speed, Glue & Shinki's landmark debut album, 1971's Eve, is one of the greatest contradictions of its time (maybe all time): a primitive, deranged, and at times downright sloppy mutation of acid blues and proto-metal, akin to the Bloomfield/Kooper/Stills Super Session crashing headlong into earliest Zeppelin and Sabbath records, as performed by musicians whose instrumental chops were actually beyond reproach…but you'd never be able to tell from this!

Spacemen 3’s 1987 album The Perfect Prescription is considered the band’s transition point from psychedelic re-creationists to an original act. But it’s also seen as the moment when founding members Pete Kember and Jason Pierce began to branch off in their own directions—the beginnings of Pierce’s band Spiritualized can be heard in “Walking with Jesus.” Released 16 years later, Forged Prescriptions gathers outtakes, alternative mixes, demos, and rarities from the 1987 recording sessions. “Things Will Never Be the Same” opens with Kember’s vocals sounding more angsty and prominent in the mix. Fans of The Brian Jonestown Massacre can identify the seeds of Anton Newcomb’s inspiration in this song.

Recording for International Artists Records, the crazed Texas label that brought the world such acid-damaged visionaries as the 13th Floor Elevators, the Red Krayola, Lost & Found, and Electric Rubayyat, the Bubble Puppy seemed by comparison to be a beacon of semisanity - a rather typical psychedelic band of the period who seemed more interested in having a good time and cranking up the amps than in reimagining the size and shape of the inner cosmos. But that's not to say they weren't a good psychedelic band - the band's best known tune, "Hot Smoke and Sassafras," was a charging guitar-heavy rocker that deservedly became a hit single, and its flip side, "Loney," was nearly as good…
