"Scorched Earth Volume 1" comes 20 years after Philip Sayce's first album, and includes seven high-octane tracks recorded at Toronto's Silver Dollar Room. Although the tracklisting is relatively short for a live record, it packs some impressive performances, adding up to 40 minutes of unrelenting blues rock. The first instalment of Scorched Earth is an electrifying collection of blues fury. This release is a powerful and dynamic live album that never overstays its welcome.

The album received mixed reviews from contemporary music critics. Ben was more successful on the music charts than Jackson's previous studio album, having charted within the top ten on the Billboard 200. Internationally, the album was less successful, peaking at number twelve in Canada, while charting within the top 200 positions in Australia and France.

Years of being the kings of Black pop were taking its toll on Earth, Wind & Fire. A split was inevitable, even if they'd recovered from their early 80's slump. They'd been on top for most of the second half of the 1970's with little real competition. No one stays on top of the pop world forever. They could have concentrated on making quality music and certainly more jazz. Maybe stop touring so much, and occasionally slip in some gimmick to keep the bills paid.

When Henry Purcell wrote his one and only opera "Dido and Aeneas" in the second half of the seventeenth century, there was no existing opera tradition in England. With a libretto based on Virgil’s Aeneid and its music stylistically close to and derived from the typically English ‘Masque’ form, Purcell created a monumental baroque opera. On this 1970 multi-channel Philips Classics recording, Dido is interpreted by soprano Josephine Veasey. The Academy of St Martin in the Fields and the John Alldis choir are conducted by Sir Colin Davis. The recording has been remastered in 2015 and is now re-released in Pentatones’s Remastered Classics series, which finally gives it the chance to expose its magnificent sound quality.

After a seven-year hiatus, Graham Nash returned to his solo career on Earth & Sky. While much of the material may have originated as an on-again/off-again collaboration with David Crosby (guitar/vocals), by the time the LP hit the racks in 1980 there were only traces of Crosby's input scattered throughout. One primary contribution highlighting the pair is the organic and acoustic "Out on the Island," and is likewise one of the best sides of the effort. In support of Nash is an all-star ensemble centering on the infamous "Mighty Jitters": Russ Kunkel (drums/percussion), Tim Drummond (bass), Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar (guitars), David Lindley (guitar/violin/vocals), and Craig Doerge (keyboards). The opening title cut, "Earth & Sky" has the earmark of a mid-tempo Jackson Browne rocker and boasts a tasty guitar lead from Joe Walsh.

“Musicians can’t really invent anything completely new,” says the 32-year old Austrian-born pianist David Helbock. “What we can do is to take ideas, and add something of ourselves. When things are working well, what emerges from that is something really exciting.” Helbock belongs to the generation of jazz musicians who are heading off in their own individual directions, pushing the boundaries, radically re-configuring our understanding of what old and new music is, re-aligning composition and improvisation, and challenging common pre-conceptions about style and personality.

Since Prairie Wind is a return to the soft, lush country-rock sound of Harvest; since Neil Young suffered a brain aneurysm during its recording; since it finds the singer/songwriter reflecting on life and family in the wake of his father's death; and since it's his most cohesive album in a decade, it would seem that all these factors add up to a latter-day masterpiece for Young, but that's not quite the case. Prairie Wind manages to be less than the sum of its parts and the problem isn't a lack of good songs (although it does have a few more clunkers than it should) or a botched concept.

"Emily’s D+Evolution" from multiple Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding is her most ambitious release yet; a theatrical concept album that expands upon both her art and herself as a world renowned genre-bending composer, bassist and vocalist. The album title, pronounced "D plus evolution," is derived from both Esperanza’s middle name and the spirit muse that flows through this brilliantly urgent, vivacious album. With six tracks co-produced by Tony Visconti (David Bowie) and drawing, at times, from diverse wellsprings ranging from Cream to Shostakovich to St. Vincent, this is a kaleidoscopic project; raw, honest and luminous. Spalding's complex but immediate compositions were committed to tape partially live and partially in front of a control room packed full of 20 or more invited guests. This deluxe edition contains two bonus tracks.
