The Amadeus were the most successful and highly-regarded Quartet of the 20th century. One of the first to make use of the then extraordinary new ability to travel the globe by aeroplane, they travelled widely and established themselves as the pre-eminent ensemble of chamber music-making for nearly 40 years.

The Juilliard String Quartet. For over seventy years they have been a household name in several different formations. They are connected to the prestigious Juilliard School in New York.

November 1792. With a grant from the Prince-elector of Cologne and an invitation from Joseph Haydn to come and study with him, young Beethoven arrived in Vienna. At that time, there could be no better place for a musician to make a mark. The capital of the Habsburg Empire concentrated within its walls the finest authors of the Classical period, which was in its heyday. Though composition was not totally ignored, those first few years were primarily dedicated to the study and development of his concert career. His virtuosity rapidly secured him pride of place in the salons, where his interpretation of the Preludes and Fugues of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier was much appreciated.

It was in 1964 a few years after an early foray into Beethoven with four of the works for RCA Victors Red Seal label that the Juilliard String Quartet embarked on this complete set. They started out with the three Razumovsky and Harp quartets, which Columbia released the next year on its subsidiary Epic label. The six Early Quartets, op. 18, followed in 196869; the Late Quartets in 196970, along with op. 95 to complete the set of Middle Quartets. By now all the Juilliard recordings were appearing on Columbia Masterworks, including their Beethoven in three separate volumes.
