Fauré’s two cello sonatas are compact, beautifully written works whose musical language, with its many subtle changes of tonality and gift for melody, has been described as conveying ‘the power of tranquil thought’. Written in the summer of 1917, during the First World War, the neglected First Sonata begins with a troubled Allegro, followed by an eloquent Andante and a sparkling Finale. The C minor Andante of the Second Sonata has its origin in a Chant funèbre commissioned for the celebration in May 1921 of the centenary of the death of Napoleon.

Roy Orbison's 1961 and 1962 Monument albums, Sings Lonely and Blue and Crying, are drawn together on one CD. All of the original faults are still present, including the relatively lightweight content, but the familiar singles plus the Orbison covers of pieces such as "Love Hurts," coupled with the excellent sound, make this a good investment. And the annotation isn't bad, either.

Dean Martin was an American singer, film actor, television star and comedian. One of the most popular and enduring American entertainers of the mid-20th Century, Martin was nicknamed the "King of Cool" due to his seemingly effortless charisma and self-assuredness. A member of the "Rat Pack," Martin was a major star in four areas of show business: concert stage/night clubs, recordings, motion pictures, and television. He was the host of the successful television variety program The Dean Martin Show (1965-1974), and subsequently The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts (1974-1985). Martin's relaxed, warbling crooning voice earned him dozens of hit singles. This collection contains all of the LPs in the Reprise catalog.

It is a pity that so few recordings of Maria Callas in concert exist to leave the testimony of this genius of the singing and actor's play that she was. Only 5 recitals have been filmed (Paris 1958, Hamburg 1959 and 1962, Covent Garden 1962 and 1964), recorded on 3 DVD.
2nd of the 3 posts.

The 1958 Hamburg concert finds Callas just one year before the loss of her voice and although her voice is not what it was in 1952 you can still hear the Vocal Miracle. The 1962 Hamburg concert finds Callas in a very tired voice but nevertheless exciting. Overall this one of the very few operatic visual documents of the Greatest Operatic Singer who ever lived!
