One of the first "underground" films of the 1960's to achieve a degree of mainstream acceptance (it was an actual hit in New York City, was well-received in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and was banned in Chicago and Boston), Andy Warhol's The Chelsea Girls offered a long, unblinking look into the lives of Warhol's retinue of "superstars" as they showed off for the camera in their various rooms in the notorious Chelsea Hotel, long a favored New York hangout for writers, artists and bohemians. Along with such notables of the moment as Eric Emerson, Brigid Polk, Ondine, and Mario Montez, one of the "girls" was Mary Woronov, years before she gained a cult following for her work in Rock 'n' Roll High School and Eating Raoul. The three-and-a-half hour film consisted of two series of images shown simultaneously, though only one soundtrack was audible…..

Alfie was released in 1966 as the soundtrack to the British film of the same name. This six-part work was arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson, with Rollins supported by a number of musicians, including Kenny Burrell (guitar), J.J. Johnson (trombone) and Phil Woods (alto saxophone). Rollins tries to capture the structures of life through his concise and energetic playing, his coherent improvisations and variations on musical themes. While "Alfie's Theme" and its variants leave the most lasting impression, "He's Younger Than You" is touching, permeated with regret. And the sensual, relaxed "On Impulse" has a nice sense of immediacy.

Composers Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim crafted the song Let Me Entertain You to chart the progress of sisters Rose and June in their Broadway musical 'Gypsy.' When we first hear the tune in the show, it's sung by an innocent troupe of child performers. By the time Rose has grown to become the world-famous exotic dancer Gypsy Rose Lee, Let Me Entertain You has become a flashy backing for her bumps and grinds.

Blues with a Feeling is a two-CD, 40-track compilation which makes the perfect audio bookend to The Essential Little Walter (or the single disc The Best of Little Walter for those on a budget) by systematically combing the Chess vaults and rounding up the best stuff. No bottom-of-the-barrel scrapings here; this compilation effectively renders all '70s Euro vinyl bootlegs null and void, both from a sound and selection standpoint. While not as exhaustive as the European nine-CD retrospective (in and out of print as of this writing), there are still things on this compilation that are left off the box set on Charly. The rarities (including the low down "Tonight with a Fool," possibly the rarest Walter Checker single of all and one whose title never shows up in the lyrics) are all noteworthy by their inclusion…

Colours launched onto the scene in 1968 with a stunningly glorious Psychedelic masterpiece of L.A studio wizardry. A super group before the name was coined, Colours was the brainchild of Gary Montgomery and Jack Dalton, two hard-working, former Motown songwriters who also penned songs for The Turtles, Nino & April and The Moon.
This magical mystery tour-de-force of Psychedelic Beatlesque Pop also features the talents of Derek & The Dominos bassist Carl Radle. This first-ever CD issue of their long-out-of-print albums (Colours and Atmosphere) is supplemented by long-lost '67 Dalton & Montgomery recordings cut just months before they formed Colours.
1969's Atmosphere features former Beach Boy David Marks around the same time he was a member of The Moon, another band with many connections to Colours…

Isadora Duncan was another self-taught primitive whose art was often regarded as a joke, and Isadora Duncan: The Biggest Dancer in the World gives the viewer ammunition to see her as a self-absorbed, hedonistic, loud and crass sham—except that she also clearly isn’t. As played by the brassy, unglamorous Vivian Pickles and with sympathetic narration by Sewell Stokes, who knew her, we understand Duncan as a courageous woman insisting on her freedom in a difficult life.
